Bra/underwear suggestions after radiotherapy

Hi, I have just finished radiotherapy for breast cancer and am beginning to feel sore underneath my breast and around my surgery scars. I have been moisturising regularly and have a selection of non wired bras, but none of the bras sit comfortably, especially underneath the boobs. I have fairly big boobs (GG cup) and have been advised that I need to wear something that lifts the boob up off the chest wall to help alleviate the sore skin. I wondered if wearing a supportive vest/shape wear/compression garment which lift the boobs up a bit would be better and i wondered if anyone else had tried this or found anything else to be successful. I was also wondering if the high lycra content in these garments would be problematic against radiotherapy treated skin

Hi @Brighterdaysahead and’welcome’ to the club no one wants to join! (The forum is great though!). I also had sore skin for several weeks post radiotherapy, compounded by lymphedema in my breast. I dealt with the sore skin by cutting up an old silk camisole and putting a strip between me and the bra strap watch helped a lot. My nurse suggested a cropped top instead of a bra but to be honest I couldn’t find one I liked. The lymphedema was helped by strips of corrugated foam issues by the lymph clinic- but I had to ask and be persistent to get a referral to them. I hope the silk idea might help you and good luck with your recovery.

Hi @Brighterdaysahead

Similar to @TW142 I put a bamboo sock inside my bra under my breast to stop friction / absorb sweat and it helped with persistent itching . A few times when I woke in a morning before I was fully conscious I was about to start scratching which would not have been good - then my hand found the sock , something which would not normally be there which was enough to wake me up and stop any attempt to scratch. I’m not big breasted but my breast was oedematous for while and I mainly wore the M+S cami bra or flexi fit crop tops at that time. Sometimes I wore a bra with crop top over the top for extra support . I think I remember a post from a lady who wore a very soft T-shirt under her bra to help protect her skin . Xx

Hi, and thank you for welcoming me to club, which in one way am sad to join, but what a blessed relief it is to have such a brilliant forum with such honest compassionate people taking the time to offer amazing support in the midst of their own cancer journey.
Thank you for tips, which i will try. I have tried a few different crop tops, which have all been a bit useless. I will definitely try the silk idea. Thank you and good luck to you too

Hi
I used a cold bamboo flannel in my soft bra

Cold as it was kept on the fridge
Flannel Purchased from Tropic
Soft bra from M&S and Asda

I also used my heart shaped pillow again to keep my arm away from my pit
Keep moisturising several times a day for the next couple of months

Ask for medihoney to soothe sore skin

Good luck

Thank you for the advice, i appreciate it. It didn’t occur to me to get a different shape pillow. Ive been propping myself up with lots of pillows which inevitably move during the night. Thank you and good luck to you too
