My mum died of pancreatic cancer at 74 and my dad has had quite a few skin cancers removed and also has a cancer marker in his blood, i know have been diagnosed with DCIS could i have the braca gene and inherited it from them??
Have you been referred to genetics? You could ask your consultant if it’s a concern for you.
Thanks Kara, im gonna do that today ![]()
Hello claspe,
Thanks for posting.
It’s understandable to wonder if your recent diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is because of an inherited altered BRCA gene. You explain you mum died from pancreatic cancer and you dad has had skin cancers.
Most breast cancers aren’t inherited. There are only a small number of people who will be at a greater risk of developing breast cancer because they have a significant family history. The biggest risk factors for developing breast cancer are being a woman and increasing age.
It looks like you are going to speak to your treatment team today as suggested by @Kara
It’s helpful if you can find out as much information as possible about your family history on both your mother’s and father’s side of the family, before this discussion (your mother and father’s side would be looked at separately). Our information about family history risk assessment explains what details your doctor needs to know in order to assess you.
