Brand new...Possible Paget's

Waiting for Mon. the 26th to get a biopsy for Paget’s disease of the nipple/breast. From what I understand it is quite rare, esp. to have it on both sides. My doctor orig. diagnosed me with galactoreahh. I did not even have the symptoms for that so I googled and have 9 of the 10 listed for Paget’s. He contacted a lady surgeon he knows who suggested the biopsy.

About 4-5 yrs ago I found a lump in my right breast and was told it had all the characteristics of a benign lymph node, and to come back in 3 months. I have implants and he did not want to risk rupturing them and said if he really thought it was serious, he would do so regardless. So, figured I was OK and never went back. He did say normally he has patients come back in 6 months but wanted to keep an eye on me.

So…3-4 yrs. later, remarried with free mamograms from our insurance I got my 2nd one. Nothing changed. I will be 49 this month. The lump is in my right breast and I also have swollen lymph nodes under my right arm and now on the right side of my neck as well, one which has been there for a couple yrs. One is brand new.

I googled and have 9 of the 10 symptoms for Paget’s disease of the nipple/breast. PLUS…I know with some cancer, such as Hodkins…which I know I do not have…there are symptoms of severe itching that cannot be explained and patients have referred to it as very extreme and I have had this itch on my arms for 9 yrs. Have had several tests by many doctors and no one can tell me what the cause of the itch is from. I have to wake up and use ice packs after my prescription Benadryl wears off and can scratch until I bleed.

I read Page’s is a slow growing cancer…I also read you may have cancer for 10 yrs. before you even notice a lump.

Well, I have recently had straw colored discharge where my nipples stick to my bra…on one side it has been clear with blood a few times. My nipples which are large and poke straight out now lie flat against my breast and have a pushed in look. I have flaky skin and itching on my nipples as well and for a time my entire breast were itching, along with a few other related symptoms I cannot name offhand but am pretty sure I could have this.

OK, found this and have all but the last one…

Flaky or scaly skin on your nipple Crusty, oozing or hardened skin resembling eczema on the nipple, areola or both Itching Redness A tingling or burning sensation Straw-colored or bloody nipple discharge A flattened or turned-in nipple A lump in the breast Thickening skin on the breast

I would like to hear from anyone who has, or has had Paget’s and see what your symptoms were and find out more about it. I am scheduled for a biopy Mon. the 26th.

Hi Kacsoa

I had Paget’s disease in 2005. My symptoms were very similar to those you describe. The disease had progressed to Stage 2 grade 2 40 mm lump. I had WLE first but the margins were not clear. This was followed by MX tram flap recon and simultaneous reduction on the other breast. I had one node involved so they felt I didn’t need radiotherapy.

This June another lump appeared on the recon. Surgeon thinks there must have been a cell remaining in the skin from 6 years ago. Have now had WLE clear margins and am about to complete radiotherapy.

Interestingly I too was 49 when first diagnosed!

Hope all goes well for you

Happy to try and answer any questions
