BRCA 2 gene and risk reducing surgeries and HRT

I had breast cancer nearly 11 years ago. This was oestrogen receptor positive 100%

Since then I have found out I have the BRCA 2 gene as my sister was diagnosed with ovarian cancer

I have opted to have risk reducing surgery, double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction and ovary/fallopian tube removal.

I am 45.

Has anyone been in the same situation and had HRT after. I am wondering if I would be offered HRT because I had an oestrogen receptor positive breast cancer. Will I be allowed this as I am having a mastectomy so the tissue will be removed.

Any advice would be appreciated

Hi

I have just posted under a new thread regarding Risk reducing surgery. I am afraid I can’t give any advice regarding HRT, but I hope you don’t mind me asking if you had to fight to get approval for risk reducing surgery? I don’t have the BRCA gene but my sister got breastcancer at 28 and I got it at 45, My consultant thinks Risk reducing surgery would add little benefit , hmmm ? Michelle

Hi original 69.

I was on HRT from 41 to 67 i gave it up when i found my breast lump,.  I had a hysterectomy at 60 to removed fibroids and they took my ovaries to,  The reason i was on it so long was my mum had osteoporosis very badly and like her i had an ealy menopause. My oncologist says he believes ,my breast cancer as i have few other risks was caused by my long term use of HRT.  So as much as i do miss it anf the damm night sweats have come back, no i wouldnt take it anymore,  Im on taxmaxifen now, but dont need chemo thankfully, just rads…

I have friends, sisters and a cousin who all have the BR gene, their mums died of breast cancer about 15 yers ago, ,  All had breasts removed at a young age, one was found to have cancer when gene tests were being done. 18 years later she is fine but was told on no account must she ever take HRT, Shes had ovaries removed,  Her sister who is younger has yet to do so. and her cousin has had ovaries removed, She lives in different part of UK and is on HRT but has been told shouldnt be for long.

It was hard for me to give up HRT ive always felt well on it and it seems to have stoppedf me getting osteoporosis, i do have thin bones, but then ive very petite and slim.   But after having breast cancer i just wouldnt risk it again.  june

do you mean hormone therapy as opposed to HRT - two very different things x
