Good afternoon
I had a mastectomy in Dec 2021 after being diagnosed with Carcinoma in-situ. I had a great experience and I have had no problems since. Except, I do get pain in the breast bone where the breast used to be. It’s like an ache rather than a stabbing pain. I want to ask if it is the Prothesis that causes pain. It comes and goes, so not constant and can last for about 15/20 mins but it does feel sore?
Thanks in anticipation
Hello loopyblue
Thanks for your post. It’s good to hear that your experience has been good and that you have had no problems apart from the breast bone pain you are now experiencing.
Ongoing pain or discomfort can happen after any type of breast surgery including a lumpectomy (wide local excision), a mastectomy, lymph node removal and breast reconstruction and some people continue to have pain and discomfort in their breast and chest for months or sometimes years after surgery.
It is unclear if you are referring to pain from an artificial breast form prosthesis or if you have had reconstruction surgery with an implant that is causing you discomfort. However, we would suggest that if you are experiencing any pain changes or a new pain that is not going away, you talk to your breast care nurse or treatment team. You will be able to discuss any concerns you have with them, and they can arrange to see you if necessary.
Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to more support and information if necessary. Your call will be confidential, and the number is free from UK landlines and all mobile networks. The number is 0808 800 6000, (Relay UK - prefix 18001).
