Breast Cancer - A Pre-Existing Condition

Hiya,

I’m a 2 year BC survivor, and I’m concerned I’ll be classified as having a pre-existing condition and won’t qualify for private insurance cancer care. I’m really just needing Signatera (the circulating dna tumour test). Does anyone have any experience here? Any workaround? Is there a cost for the test if it’s not covered by insurance?

Thanks for any insight anyone may have.

The signatera test as my oncologist said is really going to be designed to help people not take meds that they don’t need or won’t have an effect. I would be concerned about taking this test if you are already on a programme as this test is really new and I believe not 100 reliable (I can’t remember the exact words used to me however). I investigated taking it to give me further confidence but I was quickly advised against it.

Do you have insurance already? If so that’s a bit easier.

Hi and thanks for your reply. So the test is fully available here in the US (I’m relocating to UK), and it’s just a blood test that detects if your tumor’s DNA is detected in your blood. Even though I’ve had a mastectomy, there’s still a chance tiny tumor cells could have entered the blood stream and are dormant. If “woken up” this test will detect it and you can quickly jump on scans and treatment before it’s too late. This is in addition to my adjuvant therapy (chemo, pills etc. if they end up not working). Nothing out there does this so it’s actually peace of mind. My problem is, once I move over to the UK, as someone with a pre-existing condition (prior to paying for private insurance) I don’t think I’ll qualify, so just seeing if anyone out there is able to access it in this scenario. Thanks!
