Breast Cancer Gentic Testing

I have been looking into family history of BC and if I ought to discuss testing with my adult daughter.
I came across the NHS information about this , and found that it is possible to be tested when you have cancer. The hospital knew about my family history; both my parents had BC and also aunts.
Has anyone any experience of this please;

There are usually 2 steps to genetic testing:

  1. A relative with cancer has a diagnostic blood test to see if they have a cancer risk gene (this must happen before any healthy relatives are tested). Their result will be ready 6 to 8 weeks later.
  2. If your relative’s test is positive, you can have the predictive genetic test to see if you have the same faulty gene.

Hi i was diagnosed with BC in November aged 52. I told my consultant that my mum had BC initially at 45 then a recurrence at 55 and sadly died 2 years later. As I have a daughter they referred me for genetic testing to see if I was carrying any of the BC faulty genes. I had counselling first with the geneticist and then blood test. It took about 6 weeks for results and I was negative. From the sounds of it you definitely should qualify for genetic testing and should raise this with your team.
