Breast lump

Feeling scared, been referred to breast clinic after finding mass in right breast. I had milk ducts removed from both breasts over 20years ago, I had a pre- cancerous changes and was advised too have surgery. Had ovaries removed 5years ago for suspicious changes, having had hysterectomy 33years ago. Been taking HRT for about 10years. To say I’m worried is an understatement. Is there anyone who could calm me?

Hi Carol

I’m so sorry you find yourself here but it is the best place for support and advice from medical professionals and from people with personal experience, way better than risking Dr Google which can’t take emotions into consideration. This is a very scary time, one which leaves most women wondering why they put themselves through such misery.

Most women? About 90% of lumps referred to breast clinics turn out to be benign - fibroadenomas, cysts etc. Hold that thought in mind. My first referral was in my 30s and was a large mass, a fibroadenoma that was removed ‘just in case’ and that was the end of it. Unless your GP has mentioned cancer specifically and until your breast cancer consultant informs you that you have breast cancer, it’s wise (but hard work) to assume you do not have it. Referrals are now automatic and there is a two-week commitment on the part of the NHS (pandemic allowing) so if you get an early appointment, read nothing into it.

Your medical history need not indicate breast cancer but, if it does, all I can say is it’s sh** but it’s all manageable. Recovery rates are high, with treatment improving every year, and the negative images we are bombarded with do a great deal of damage in my view. What other illness immediately reduces fully grown women to quivering jellies?

There’s a lot of waiting so focus on your emotional wellbeing for now, something you can do something about. If you’re into yoga, meditation, mindfulness, running, baking… practise, practise, practise. It will stand you in good stead. I found great relief tuning into YouTube videos like Progressive Hypnosis’s Manifest Healing - guaranteed to give me relief from my anxiety and send me off with the fairies…

I hope everything turns out to be ok for you but remember even a breast cancer diagnosis, huge blow that it is, is still manageable. Take good care of yourself,
