Breast lymphademia -What is it

Breast lymphademia -What is it I may have breast lymphademia. Has anyone had it?

I don’t know anything about it, so if Anyone has been through it would love to hear from you.

Cheers

Hi Karen

Yes, I have lymphoedema in the breast. Basically what has happened is that the lymph nodes that drain away the lymphatic fluid from the breast have been removed, so there is a build up of fluid.

You will know if you have it quite simply by gently pinching the skin on your good breast and looking at the thickness, and then doing the same on your other breast and comparing the two. There also appears to be a thickening and an “orange peel effect” as a result of the fluid build up.

I went to have manual lymphatic drainage, but quit ehonestly it was such a trial - had to drive thirty miles each way every day for a month, that I was exausted at the end of it. I was shown how to do it myself, but to be honest, it has eased somewhat now, and I don’t notice it quite so much as I did.

Hope this helps, but if you have other questions, then ask away!

Me too! Hi

I have just been told I have breast lymphoedema. My breast is extremely red, hot and inflamed - and the skin on the affected breast is extremely thick and hard (orange peel effect is the best way to describe it).

I am waiting for an appt with a lymphoedema nurse to asses where we go from here, I must say it is very uncomfortable and a bit of a nuisance - can’t wait till it is sorted so I can finally feel human again!

Good luck, keep in touch

Lymphoedema booklet Hi all
Here is a link to a Breast Cancer Care publication about lymphoedema which you may find helpful to read:

I have lymphoedema in my breast and arm. To control the breast odema I use Kinesio tape. The lymphoedema nurse can show you how to use this. I have found that it makes a huge difference to the swelling I have in this breast. Unfortunately it is not available on prescription and costs approx. £7.00-8.00 per roll, but this does last quite a while. I’ve also been shown self lymph drainage, but to be honest I not very good at doing this on a regular basis.

Hope this info helps.

Adele

Yep, me too.

Have had six sessions of MLD, and will have a further six in March. Though the condition is better than it was, the tissue is still very hard, particularly underneath the breast.

Currently, I am receiving Bowen Therapy for the lymphoedema, but so far, have not noticed a difference. However, there are four more sessions to go.

I suspect this condition is a chronic one; the lymphoedema can be controlled, but may not go away completely.

The link you posted unfortunately doesn’t work, neither does “cut and paste”.
In any event, the information really only relates to lymphoedema in the arm and not in the breast. Perhaps the info. could be amended to include what clearly is another side effect that does indeed cause real problems.
Many thanks

Further Information Hi all

Apologies for the previous link which does not appear to work, I will pass your comments to the relevant team.

I have given a further couple of links here which may be of interest. The first is a link to a booklet aimed at reducing the risk of lymphodema and the other is a link to information on this site specifically on this subject.

I do hope these work:

_lymphoedema_0.pdf

I do hope you find these useful.

pain after radiotherapy hi all, i finished my rads just 12 months ago and have
suffered breast and rib pain ever since, sometimes
the pain is unbearable and at others just “background”
at the moment the pain is horrible and i am finding it
difficult to get a full nights sleep therefore am weary
the next day and so it goes on. I have lymphodema of
the breast so am not sure if this makes the pain worse.
Whe I had my lymph nodes removed ( no spread thank god) the resulting scar is as if some one has threaded
a cord through and drawn it in, i have a deep indentation
and this also give me lots of pain, i know one lady at
the clinic has a similar problem and had an operation to
put it right but i can face the thought of undergoing
surgery again. I have had my first mammogram since
surgery in may 05but is 3 weeks and have still not heard
the results whether it is the waiting and anxiety that is
causing the pain to increase i dont know, i have contacted my bc nurse who assured me that i would
have heard if there was a problem and that the films had
been looked at and it was just a “blip” on the admin side.
Thanks ladies for taking the time to read this i know it
is a bit of a moan but somedays it is hard to be
positive, the longer time goes on the more paraniod
iget, does anyone else feel the same.

regards to you all

Build up of Fluid Hi,

Just wanted to know if anyone can give me some reassurance as I have had to go back to the hospital 6 times to have my under arm drained after my op in the beginning of December. I am at last starting my Radio Therepay next week but the fluid has come back and is really uncomfortable ! Anyone out there who has had the same problem and can give me some advise or direct me to a website that can explain as I have tried everything and cant see any info.

The hospital keeps saying it will go but how long should it take to find its own way. i feel alone on this one as other people that had treatment at the same time dont seem to be suffering.

Thanks

Barbara

Dear Barbara I have reposted your post ‘Build up of fluid’ to the ‘Undergoing treatment’ room where it will be read by others who have had or are having a similar experience to you following surgery
