Breast pain 4 years on

Hi is it normal to still have very tender and sore breast 4 years after cancer? I had 2 surgeries to remove lump and surrounding tissue. 20 radiotherapy sessions and am on daily exemestane, and leuprorelin injection every 3 months. Last mammogram in April was clear but I can feel a small lump recently

Hello sharonmlj

Thank you for posting.

It is understandable you have questions about the tenderness and soreness you are feeling in your breast 4 years on from breast cancer treatment.

There can be many reasons women experience these symptoms after breast cancer.

After radiotherapy some women experience aches and pains in the breast or chest area which can persist for months or years afterwards. Some women will also experience ongoing (chronic) or persistent pain after surgery. This may be caused by damage to the nerves, particularly those in the axilla (underarm).

You say you are taking Leuprorelin. A common side effect of Leuprorelin is breast tenderness and many women will experience this

Having sore, or tender breasts can cause anxiety. On its own, breast pain isn’t usually a sign of breast cancer, or breast cancer recurrence. However, it is important to find out what the possible cause of these symptoms may be so this can be managed.

Because you have had breast cancer previously and can also feel a small lump we would suggest you call your breast care nurse or treatment team to discuss these symptoms. If you’ve been discharged from the hospital, you can make an appointment to see your GP… They can make an assessment and decide whether to refer you back to the breast clinic.
