breast pain

breast pain I wonder if anyone is suffering from breast pain, and is it normal, i finished all my treatment in july, i had 8 chemo then 4 weeks of radiotherapy, i am now on tamoxifen, i have had the occasional stabbing pain in my breast but this is much different, its like a cramping thats painful and last for a few minutes… is this normal… i have left a message for my breast nurse to call me back but she is really busy and i know i wont hear from her for days…

Hello Alison I’ve read your profile and see you have had surgery. When I had a lumpectomy many years ago I also had stabbing pains in my chest, only lasted a minute or two but like you it worried me.

When I mentioned it to my surgeon I was told that it was the nerve endings knitting together again and was nothing to worry about. It seemed to last for years but got less frequent and knowing it was normal did’nt bother me much.

I have since had a recurrence but having had a mastectomy this time haven’t had them at all.

Good idea to speak to your breast care nurse, I hope I have eased your mind a little.

Best wishes.

Hi Alison I too finished rads in July following lumpectomy and lymph node removal in March, and have found that since rads I have had a lot of pain particularly in the outside of the breast and the area under the armpit scar, which has got worse in the last month or so. My bc nurse got me an appointment with the surgeon, who referred me for an ultrasound which I’ve had this morning. The radiologist said the pain is due to radiation damage and there is inflammation and pockets of fluid there, also the circulation in that area isn’t very good. I’ve also been referred to the lymphoedema nurse.

Apparently, it’s still early days for us in terms of healing, but its so frustrating that I recovered so well after the op but now am in more pain eight months down the line than I was after the surgery. i don’t get the cramping pain that you descibe, this is constant like mastitis and even the pressure of clothes touching it is painful.

I hope that you get some help from your bc nurse and things improve for you,

Love Nicky x

For alison15 Hi Alison,

I’m sorry you’re suffering with so much discomfort at the moment. Have you thought about contacting our free phone helpline on 0808 800 6000 if you would like to talk to someone in confidence about how you are feeling at the moment.

Everyone on our helpline either has experience of breast cancer or is a breast care nurse.

The team comes from a variety of backgrounds, so callers get to talk to someone who has an understanding of the issues they’re facing.
The team is able to talk about both technical and emotional issues surrounding breast cancer and breast health.

Kind regards

thanx to all thank you so much everyone who replied… you are all so much quicker than my breast nurse haha (i know she is very busy)… she did call me back at lunch time, and seemed to think it wasnt anything to worry about, told me all about the healing and nerves etc… but she did get me in to see my oncologist on friday just to put my own mind at rest… but once again thanks to you all, your knowledge is invaluable xx
