Breast reduction on non cancer side

I had a, I suppose you would call ot a summary of my treatment by letter today which states no f/up until next mammogram. I do have open access to the breast cancer nurses. My question is, I was asked if I would be considering symmetrisation in the future, whichI am, as my breast has gone from a a cup size f to a c so I am quite lopsided. How long after my original surgery/radiotherapy am I likely to be allowed the op?I I am 77 and don’t want to wait too long!

Hi aliceeliza

Thanks for your post.

It’s understandable that you wish to explore the possibility of breast symmetrisation following your recent surgery.

This type of surgery aims to make your unaffected breast match your treated breast as closely as possible by reducing the size of the breast, a procedure known as mammoplasty.

The timeframe for carrying out breast symmetrising surgery may vary. Generally, most surgeons wait until after initial breast cancer treatment is complete, including any radiation, and the treated breast has healed. This may take several months but this decision will depend on an assessment by your surgeon and you will need to contact your breast care nurse or treatment team to request this.

As you are conscious of a difference in the cup size of your breasts you may wish to talk to your breast care nurse about being fitted with a partial prosthesis which can be worn inside a bra and helps to fill out the breast outline. This may help you to feel less lopsided while you wait for further surgery.
