Hi there,
I had a mastectomy and LD reconstruction in November 2008. I had a capsular contracture and had the implant replaced just one week ago. My brest is getting harder and tighter and more swollen again and i am not sure if this is a capsular contracture again, implant rejection, or whether it is just the healing process.
Is it normal for the breast to be tight and swollen only a week after surgery. I have no temperature so it cannot be an infection. My follow up is in three weeks.
Any advice would be very welcome.
Thanks Sue
HI sue,
My best advice would be to contact your breast care nurse or consultant’s secretary and speak to them on Monday. If you are concerned in the meantime that things are getting worse and cannot wait, the out of hours GP service will see you in clinic and check you out . They are working 24 hours a day over the weekend, You can speak to a experienced nurse or a GP initially to get their advice.
Not all infections have a temperature with them until they have a good hold and early intervention is always preferable. If in doubt see someone asap. It is very difficult to give advice without seeing what is actually happening.
I’m going in for the same procedure on 4th August so wish me well.
Let us know how you get on.
Best wishes,
Lyn x x x
Hi Lynn,
Thanks so much for your advice, I did contact BC Nurse and going to clinic tomorrow for assessment.
Im sorry to hear you got to have same op, presume you got the same. Hope it goes well and hope I havent put you off as Im sure if I got it again its very rare.
All the best

Hi Lynn,
Just to say I hope your op went well on the 4th. I am feeling quite comfortable now but did need to have some fluid drained around the breast - 120ml but the relief was amazing. I do recommend the Asda Post Surgery bra which I have posted on the forum. Hope you recover quickly sweetie.
Love Sue xx
Hi…
I was due to have a Diep using the tummy last October instead my surgeon advised that the breast was a lot softer than expected through having rads …so i just had implants, i did go slightly larger as after having the nipple and quiet a large part of the breast removed i didn’t want to match the affected breast and become an A cup - since then i have had 4 painful tattoo’s and a capsulator in which i have one breast that is natural and the other that is hard and hasn’t dropped at all … this was apparent after just a couple of months …after nearly a year i am due to have the original op to create a breast from the tummy - fingers crossed this will be my journey over…no more hospitals and operations x and most of all no more sleepless night of pain from a rock hard boob ;O)
Hi Sue, I had my original mastectomy way back in the dark ages of 1989! I had the muscle on my back used (flap) and an implant also. The operation was succesful and I healed quickly. But a few years on my breast went hard too and the surgeon did another operation and replaced my implant with a newer type. This was done around 17years ago and I have had no further problems. I jokingly say to friends that I have my 39 year old left boob and my 59 year old right one. The younger is much more pert than the older model but when I am wearing my bra it is not visable. Unfortunately it is not the same when I am bollock naked! But I am still here and I give thanks for that. I even bought two new bras yesterday in the John Lewis sale as they have a range of pretty bras for people who have had a mastectomy. Hope all works well for you too. LOL XX
