Brillo Pad hair!

As legend has it, when you lose your hair your new hair grows back soft and downy, like a babys, and everyone wants to stroke it…

Eh, hello! Mine is wiry and curly and looks and feels awful, no one in their right mind would want to touch it!

Anyone else had this ‘brillo pad’ hair and what happened next, did it grow out eventually?

The baby fluff only stays a few weeks and then as you say it frequently grows into a brillo pad, or Marge Simpson or Jeremy Clarkson!!!
I lost my hair twice within 6 months as I needed more chemo. I have to say mine has taken nearly 2 years to get back to normail - just as I’ve just started taxol as well!!!
I think most people say it takes about a year to go back to normal and for some people it never does but the tight, dry curls improves. Lots of people end up using gels and straighteners to get a more normal look. At least it has come back now - I just hated the look and never felt like the real me unless it was starightened and I got fed up of old ladies commenting on my ‘fantastic perm’

My hair has been growing back since January, as it didn’t grow at all during rads for some reason. I have had one cut which was nothing more than a trim and a shape really. It is soft now and wavy rather than curly but it has got a mind of its own and is only tamed by wax. What gets me down is how slow the growth is. it has ben 8 months now and it is still so short.

Hey Dippykate,
Its good to hear from you, I follow your posts and so much admire your strength and honesty. How are you doing? You are having a sh*t time, how shallow am I, going on about hair quality?

On the hair front: You are so right about the ‘perm’ look. Its very grey, which I expected, but I had a lovely blonde bob and its a long way from that. I live in Dublin and have been going to a “specialist” hairdresser who deal with chemo patients all the time. They say I will need to have 3 or 4 cuts at 6/8 week intervals to get rid of the “chemo hair” and they will dye it when my “real hair” comes through. They say if they dye the chemo hair blonde it goes kind of pink , hey that would reinforce the brillo pad thing…

Maybe its all BS but I have reasoned that they are hardly doing it to have a good laugh at chemo patients!

I still wear my wig when I’m out and about, work etc, but really look forward to ditching it!
