Dear All
The BASO conference is at theRoyal Society of Medicine on 2nd/3rd Nov and is an annual meeting of surgeons from across the UK who treat all types of cancer. This conference will have many presentations, videos, debates and posters discussing advances in both surgery and in technology as well as techniques.
There will be a free public session on Tuesday, 3rd November at 2.30pm, which will be focussed on treatment for Breast Cancer. This session will take form of a round table discussion on topic of “Mastectomy 2015” and any interested Breast Cancer Care service users are welcome to go along. The RSM is easy to find, and is a short walk from Oxford Circus Tube Station, in central London.
Adele Francis – Consultant Breast Surgeon from Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham – will chair the session and will outline mastectomy practice and how this has changed.
Mairead McKenzie and Maggie Wilcox, Trustees of the Independent Cancer Patient Voices (ICPV) will then speak about their different mastectomy experiences – reconstruction and no reconstruction – reasons, satisfaction, problems, and survivorship. They will also talk about the need for breast cancer patients to be given proper information regarding types of reconstruction, implants, prostheses etc to enable patients to make an informed choice and be referred to an appropriate specialist.
This is an interactive session and Mairead and Maggie are keen to get input from patients in the audience in order to encourage conversation and debate. Questions can be raised at any point but we will aim to leave time for open discussion at the end. Feedback from this session will be sent to breast surgeons and interested units – it may also give the Trainee surgeons ideas for further research to benefit future breast cancer patients.
Please join them for an interesting and enjoyable discussion!
