Ca 15-3

Hello,

Should I be worried if bloods tests show that the CA 15- 3 has risen for the first time from
8 to 11? Should I follow this up?

Thank you

HI srd

Thanks for posting.

We’re not sure why your CA15-3 is being tested.

CA15-3 is a tumour marker blood test. Tumour markers are proteins that may be produced by the body in response to the presence of cancer. Tumour markers can be detected in a blood sample. The main tumour markers linked to breast cancer are CA15-3, CA 27.29 and CEA.

It isn’t clear how reliable the measurement of blood tumour markers are. This is because tumour markers can be raised for other reasons such as other benign (not cancer) health conditions or treatment.

Its not unusual for results to fluctuate within the normal range. Different labs may also produce slightly different results. Generally, the reference range for CA15-3 is less than 30 U/mL so your result of 11 remains within the normal range. Do speak to your treatment team if you have any concerns.
