I had my first mammogram which thankfully was clear. I had a physical breast exam beforehand, the Consultant commented that i did not appear to have dense breasts, which i know is good. Websites say that only a mammogram can determine this so i am confused.
Can anyone help

This is just anecdotal but, prior to surgery, the surgeon did a physical check of both boobs and said they didnât feel dense because they were âsoft, smooth and squishyâ. I had no idea of the role of breast tissue density at the time. Following my first anniversary mammogram the radiologist asked me if I wanted to see the images, which I did, and she explained the BI-RADS scale and said that my boobs are âlate A going on Bâ and that she was surprised Iâd had breast cancer at all. However I did . Anyway, the surgeonâs assessment, by feel, a year previously was corroborated so I guess their experience means they can do so.
Thank you for taking time to reply. I think that probably an examination by hand wouldnt be an absolute without a mammogram but a breast consultant would have a pretty good idea. Hope you are doing well
I expect so but I am not a medic so am just going off personal experience and logic. I see that you have posed the question to the BCN nurses so I hope you get a fuller explanation from them than I could possibly give. Presumably the hospital has access to the images taken during your mammogram, could you ask your own BC nurse at the hospital to give you an idea of where you are on the BI-RADS scale if it is going to help you emotionally going forward? Density of breast tissue isnât a foolproof measure, however, as I donât have very dense breasts yet I still got an ER+ HER2- IDC with integral DCIS. Yes I am doing fine, thank you, two years since surgery and almost two since rads . I have had my second year mammogram and everything appears to be fine. I hope you get some reassurance about your own situation.
