In 2005, 2016 and again in 2020 I was referred to a breast clinic because of a lump I had in my right breast and each time was told it was Fibroadenoma, but it has grown over the years hence have kept getting it checked. I was told it could change with hormones but as I’ve become perimenopausal my breasts have got sore, so I wanted to just check again that it’s Fibroadenoma. This time the clinic said they’re certain it’s cancer!
They have taken biopsies but wouldn’t give me any more discussion about it - basically gave me a card with McMillan Cancer Support on it and said I’d need to just wait, I’m distraught! And I’m now so worried as if the previous checks missed cancer and instead thought it was Fibroadenoma then the cancer is likely well established and spread. Is it easy to mistaken Fibroadenoma for cancer? And has this happened to anyone else?
Hi @aqua74,
Firstly, I’m so sorry to hear what you’re going through - waiting for results can be such an anxiety inducing time and it’s completely expected that you would be feeling distraught with that news. I hope that you are able to find the forum a comforting and supportive place.
I’m sorry no one has responded to your question. It might be useful for you to post this in Ask our Nurses your questions - Breast Cancer Now forum or to give our nurses a call on 0808 800 6000 and they will be able to explain to you what you’ve been told in more depth.
Sending love,
Alice
Hi @aqua74 , very sorry you going thru this …i had a fibroafenoma in 2012… i was 46 so well over the age tbat is normal for them…surgeon gave me option to take or leave …i went for removal…after histology, a 4mm cancer was found attached to the fibroadenoma…which went completely unseen on US and mammo …the cancer was dcis…so a cancer that didnt have the ability to spread st that time…and small enough to go undetected …so if ypu have been back and foward i would imaginevif anything had grown they would have seen it …so could be like me, that rheve now found sonething cery small which wasnt there at yoyr last scan … i wish you the very best moving forward
