I have my breast clinic appointment on Tuesday after finding a small lump. The dr also felt the lump, even though we both described it as apple pip size.
What I’m now worrying about is what if the clinic say its nothing to worry about after only doing an US or mammogram. … should I insist on a biopsy, fna or lumpectomy to be 100% sure as isn’t this the only way to know for sure? Xxx
Hi csk
It sounds like you’re having a worrying time at the moment, I’m sure some of the other users will along soon to offer you their advice and experiences.
In the meantime it might help to give the BCC helpline a call and talk things through with a member of staff. Here you are able to share your concerns with someone who will offer you a listening ear as well as emotional support and practical information. The number to call is 0808 800 6000 and lines are open today until 2pm and then Monday to friday 9 to 5pm.
Best wishes Sam, BCC Facilitator
Dear clk,
The doctors and radiologists who perform the ultra sound (the mammogram results won’t be available straight away) are very experienced at recognising if a lump needs a biopsy or not. If they say it isn’t cancer, then it probably isn’t. However, you could ask for a biopsy or FNA to put your mind at rest. You might have to wait a week, or possibly longer depending on where you live, for the results. A lumpectomy is major surgery and won’t be done unless a cancer diagnosis is positive. The biopsy (if performed) is the only way to know for sure.
Please trust the doctors who will see you at the clinic. They perform these tests day in, day out, and know what they are doing. If they say your ‘apple pip’ is either a cyst, or some other benign breast condition, ask them to explain how they can be sure.
I have included a link to a booklet about breast clinic appointments:
www2.breastcancercare.org.uk/sites/default/files/your_breast_clinic_appointment_bcc_70.pdf
which outlines how it will work, what the test are, and also about your results when they are available.
Sending hugs and best wishes for Tuesday.

Thank you so much.
It’s the word ‘probably’ I’m uncomfortable with… I need ‘definitely’ to settle my feeling of ‘what if’.
Thanks again xxx
Thank you Lou… that is exactly my reason for wanting a definitely! So glad you pushed for an us… hope you’re doing ok xxx
