Can the mirena coil be used after B.C ?

Hi has anyone used the mirena coil after having B.C is it safe?

I used to take the pill but now i do not want that any more. My B.C was not hormone receptive had snb ,chemo wle and rads last year, periods are back but quite irregular, but i do not want any more children have 2 who are now 7 & 12.

Hubby wil not consider the snip !! so as usual it is up to me to sort out.

Anybody got any advice?/

Thanks

ooohhh men ! You have been through all this and hubs won’t consider the snip ? Lol,don’t get me started. Well, I’ve had the mirena coil for 4 years and it has been fantastic,no periods ! Whoo hoo. However, having been through surgery and told that er and pr +ve not sure how I stand at the mo,at initial consultation was told that it was ok to keep the coil( but that was before had the pathology) as the hormone amounts used were minute, see what oncologist has to say when I get my appointment, keep you posted.

Hi,
I have been assured that I can keep my Mirena Coil and I am er+ (unknown pr status).
Surgeon said the levels of hormone released are very small and very localised.
I had horrendous period problems before having the Mirena fitted ,it made such a difference.

I was advised to have my mirena coil removed after surgery but that is because my BC was hormone positive. I was told that as I am taking tamoxifen the coil had to be removed. So I assume if you are not on hormone medication such as tamoxifen it may be o.k. but do a bit of research first.

I was advised to have mine out but strongly ER + and also 51 so prob on verge of menopause anyway. Not had any periods since it came out. On Tamoxifen too so being that I have it for heavy periods, really not necessary. Hubby had snip years ago so not need for it’s contraceptive uses!!

Hi,
I personally believe that the mirena coil was one of the factors/triggers that gave me Bc. Mainly due to being told when the first cell would have divided being linked to when I had the mirena put in. Maybe a coincidence that my 2 friends with Bc all had one too. I don’t think anyone knows for sure just yet. There are people talking about taking a class action out against the manufacturers, not sure at what stage that is though.
I asked all my consultants when I first had my dx and they said standard advice is that the mirena coil is no problem. But when I pointed out that it releases progesterone and that my tumour was er+ and pr+, but that tamoxifen would only block the estrogen, the consultant said ‘go and get it out as soon as you can’. I don’t know if I am right or not but it was one of the few things I had control over and was pleased I got rid of it. They are great and it really worked for me but hey compared to cancer I wasn’t prepared to chance it. Just a personal view and hope you find a solution that is right for you. I thought if you definitely didn’t want to try for more children, they would push you through menopause. Could you ask for alternatives without hormones?
Lots of luck
Lily

I have had my mirena in for a couple of years and love the #no periods’ concept.

My BC was highly er+ and pr+ and I have so appt to have mine reoved during my final week of rads. I am also getting a smear done at the same time.

I don’t think it contributed towards my bc but I will do all I can to get rid of the hormones that drive my bc including the removal of my ovaries later in the year.

Hi Sarah

I have had a mirena coil for 6 years and like you my bc is not hormone receptive. My onc advised that if it had been hormone sensitive he would recommend removal of coil immediately but that keeping it would help me with hot flushes brought on by menopause during chemo.

Hi there,

I still have my mirena coil in to help with heavy periods.I’ve had one for 4yrs.
BC diagnosd last May WLE and sential node biopsy, 4 wks radiotherapy. E+ Pr+. Onc and gyneacolgist said it’s ok to stay.
I don’t think it’s connected, it was certainly dismissed by my breast surgeon.
Still have periods despite tamoxifen and being 52!
