Can you diagnose without a biopsy

My mum noticed a lump in her breast and went the doctors the doctor then refered her to breast clinic which we visited on Tuesday they have done mammograms ultra sounds took her bloods and examined her they are worried as she seems to of lost weight weighing only 6 st her own gp is testing her for diabetes as she thinks she is diabetic . The doctor at the breast clinic basically told us the lump my mum is feeling they suspect is breast cancer and they are also concerned as they have noticed 2 other lumps in the other breast and say her lymphnodes are swollen but there not sure if they’re feeling them because of how skinny she is . We are waiting for biopsy results and have been sent for a ct scan already we are due back at breast clinic on 3rd Feb can this still turn out not to be cancer

Did they take any biopsies?
There is always a chance it isn’t breast cancer. They can never fully diagnose without test results.
It is a worrying time for anyone. Sending you both big hugs

@n4t4lier17 I was told on the day I had the mammogram, ultrasound, biopsies etc. I said is there any chance it’ll come back and not be cancer and the surgeon said - if the biopsy comes back with no cancer in it then we will rebiopsy as we’ve missed it.

I’m sorry to be so blunt but sometimes they just know from the clinical signs and the feel of the lump :people_hugging::people_hugging:

I no I think I’m just trying to think there’s going to be a better outcome the thing with the lump my mum found is it does Move around which apparently is a good sign but when they sed about the other 2 they found in the other breast and the seeds of calcium that’s wat worried me

Try not to worry too much @n4t4lier17 though I know that’s easier to say than do.

Once they’ve got the test results back, if it is cancer, then they will be able to develop a treatment plan that is targeted directly at her. There are so many different sorts of cancer too, and there have been so many advances in knowledge and treatment that outcomes are improving all the time.

Hi n4t4lier17

Thank you for posting. It sounds like it’s a difficult time for you and your mum, and it is understandable that you have questions. Waiting for results is a worrying time and the uncertainty can be difficult to manage.

Breast changes can happen for many reasons. They may be due injury, or due to benign conditions (not cancer).

A diagnosis of breast cancer is done using a triple assessment ; a breast examination, breast scans using mammograms and ultrasound and a tissue biopsy. Although a breast examination and radiology scans can indicate a level of suspicion as @pat mentions, a diagnosis of breast cancer can only be confirmed with a tissue biopsy as @foxgem says.

Weight loss can also have many causes and it sounds as though the multidisciplinary team are being very thorough in their investigations, and you explain she has been referred for a CT scan to look at the rest of her body. It is difficult to say what may be causing your mum’s weight loss and breast symptoms until all the results are back. But as @al1kat says if the results do show a breast cancer, then any treatment that your mum needs will be tailored to her individual situation, and the treatment team will take into account her general health.
