Cancer made me eat šŸ˜‹

It’s done that to me twice! Fish n chips last time! Sometimes it’s necessary

Haha I’ve actually managed to resist this time and decided on peanut butter on toast, dark chocolate and peppermint tea. Might not be so disciplined tomorrow though!

Brilliant! Thanks. When I’ve got through my double dark choc cookie mountain I’ll try it :joy:. I don’t normally like chocolate all that much so for me it’s definitely part of the medicine. Only 2 weeks to go then I can have a rest from the damned stuff

DD day off so she made me a vegan poke bowls for using toasted bean sprouts, smoked and cauldron ginger and garlic tofu, soya beans, sushi rice, carrots and cucumber. She added assorted pickles, toasted sweetcorn and kimchi to hers and her dads. TBH its good to have something closer to the food I was eating pre chemo.

Looks delicious - and nutritious too . Glad you’re managing some nice food.

Hello Everyone! Been following various threads for a while since I was diagnosed in December and I’m loving so many of these suggestions for recipes! I still can’t get over what an amazing community we have on here! I feel like diet is one aspect we can have some amount of control over during a time like this.

I was curious if anyone has utilised a slow cooker at all during their cooks? I have one at home, and someone suggested to me that it could be useful to batch cook, but I know that may cost a bit more energy with prep time? Wasn’t sure if anyone had found using one helpful during their own experiences?

@daffodil_dream no I haven’t though I do have one - I’ve never used it! One thing I think you could definitely use it for is making soup which you can then freeze in meal size portions. Soup is a great standby when you’re feeling low and you can pack loads of protein in it with lentils and beans. Let us know on this thread if you do use it and how it goes - you might inspire me to get mine out of the loft :joy:

Yes I love mine. I used it early days to make chicken stew/vegetable soup before chemo day. Typically it quickly became the things that nausea didnt allow me to eat. But it was really easy to prep. They can also be used for curries/chilli/bolognese. Put it in, forget about it, at the end of the day you have dinner

@daffodil_dream i used my slow cooker lots during chemo, would prep before leaving for chemo and leave it doing its thing and know whilst I was at chemo that I’d come home to a healthy meal all done! For me it made it a lot easier and one less thing to think about…plus if you are delayed it doesn’t matter! Chilli was my go too, lots of healthy veg and I managed it through chemo! Xx

I used my slow cooker yesterday. I can set up when I have energy so there is s9mething at the end of the day when my energy zips down.

My Dh did a heap of batch cooking but chemo changed my taste buds so much it all tasted foul. I now only have one or two days worth at most as my taste keeps changing and food I would normally eat (whole food veggie) I cannot tolerate as my guts rebel. Thankfully this thread has helped stop me losing too much weight from an unhappy mix of nausea followed by the runs.

Thanks so much everyone! Appreciate everyone’s insights so far  The change in taste buds combined with nausea was what made me hesitate on batch cooking too much! I’ll likely stick to fairly simple recipes and see how it goes - will definitely keep you all posted on my food journey! Picked up a few ingredients for the likes of overnight oats/smoothies today (yum!) I was wondering what coco powder you all prefer to utilise?

@daffodil_dream any cocoa will do as long as it’s 100% cocoa with nothing added. Supermarket brands are fine; the Green and Black organic one is nice but pricier. You don’t need to spend loads especially if you’re going to mix it with other stuff, you won’t get the full benefit of the smoother/nicer taste. Especially if your tastebuds are shot! Atm most food is tasting like cardboard to me :joy:. But I dutifully downed my cocoa protein shake when I came back from a post chemo walk this afternoon!

Hi Everyone. Thanks daffodil-dream for guiding me here.

Re Slow Cooker. I use mine all the time for batch cooking. I love it.

I do wish they had a timer on them. Ive had two and they just have High and Low. I do have to be careful not to leave mine on High. Ive overcooked things in the past. But I know many people cook on Low for ages.

If Im short of time High is better. If I want to leave for a few hours, the Low is better.

I make smoothies all the time. Milk, fruit, yogurt, greens, fruit juices. All go in in all types of combinations. The only one that didnt work well was greens on their own. Tasted like grass. :squinting_face_with_tongue:. But adding them to milk/fruit juices (apple/cranberry), fruits, made a huge difference.

Oh the fun will start when I start chemo in two weeks.

Well done to all you ladies who are already in the middle of treatment. Youve made some lovely meal options. I cant read everything, as I get very tired from cancer/operation fatigue, but just glancing through, is giving me ideas already.

Vegan tofu broth. ( for those guts from hell dare not be far from the loo clutching loperamide days.) this for me is a fairly safe option on days when food seems scary to eat because you are worried your guts will rebel)

Use marigolds vegan stock or a good quality chicken or vegetable stock cube to make the broth.

I used deep fried tofu cubes, you can use cauldrons garlic and ginger ready to use tofu pieces.

Finely diced courgette, carrot, onion, mushrooms. You can add other veggies if your guts will let you. One carrot was cut to make carrot flowers when sliced. Dice a small onion or spring onions and gently sautƩ in a little olive oil. Add rest of veg sautƩ gently then add broth and tofu. Bring to boil then simmer until the veg is at a point you can both eat and digest it.

Cook some none wholewheat noodles or linguine, you can use GF pasta but try to source a good Italian brand as the cheaper supermarket ones tend to turn to glue. If you do not have to clutch loperamide you can venture into wholewheat pastas.

Place the noodles, linguine, or GF pasta in a bowl, spoon the broth over the top and you will have a simple plain easy to digest meal with plenty of extra fluid that may help you stay hydrated.

Minimal cooking time. The broth could be made in advance as long as it’s rapidly cooled and kept in a fridge then reheated well. (Especially if your guts hate you) Recommend cooking pasta just before needed esp the GF pastas.

The extra broth may help with fluid intake and the boiled veg and tofu l found easier to digest. The tofu will take on the flavour of the broth.

Try and avoid using harder to digest items such as pulses and beans and wholemeal if you have the runs from chemo and your guts rebel at roughage. Look for soluble forms of roughage as an alternative. remember you can call the 24/7 hospital number if your suffering and the drugs you have to take home make no difference. Be wary of dehydration and keep up fluid intake as best you can.

Have a look at the recipe for Sumo broth earlier in this thread for when you feel a bit better as that has a far greater nutritional content.

Wow! Not only do they look so chocolatey and tasty, but they have that lovely rustic presentation like something you’d get a in country cafe. Very nice @foxgem!
