Exactly, Ćt is okay to have a backup meal plan in easy reach. Eating some food is better than no food on wipe out days.
Just discovered this thread in my post 2nd EC chemo/on steroids/not sleeping phase. Grew up in SE Asia and your recipes looks soo lovely. My comfort food is a stirfry of any kind. This will be tried. Thanks.
Could someone please let me know what protein powder is? Not something l have ever used and have no idea what it is.
I bought mine off of amazon. You add a scoop to smoothies, millshake, baking. Itās not something ive used before either but this seemed to be the best I could find with the most natural ingredients
Thereās probably some controversy with this one as ive just seen it contains live cultures but so far ive been ok. It must be very small amounts
@wibbles there are loads of different protein powders around but whey is basically derived from milk whereas most others are plant based/vegan. Itās simply a powder that you dissolve in liquids of your choosing or stir into yoghurt, porridge , anything really! Itās a good way of getting extra protein in your diet when you canāt eat much or (for me) donāt eat meat or fish. Donāt cook it though. I donāt get on with milk so for years and years Iāve used soya protein powder which has the next highest amount of protein per spoon to whey. Make sure you get a natural one thatās not full of sugar and other additives.
I buy this one https://www.buywholefoodsonline.co.uk/organic-soy-protein-powder.html
In the past Iāve used Pulsinā. You can Google it!
Just caught up with this thread, so many recipes!!
On protein powder I use this one in my porridge and overnight oats https://theorganicproteincompany.co.uk/products/organic-whey-protein-raw-cacao-and-maca?tw_source=google&tw_adid=&tw_campaign=23069359679&tw_kwdid=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23069422547&gbraid=0AAAAADx1iOsrIVI4NlGJ5eGs4PVMQqcfD&gclid=Cj0KCQjwyr3OBhD0ARIsALlo-Onq05ue1ZZNGdpnW8NZsKImj2Yc_Zh4j4BjfH-AhTkuJgw8DmR51z0aAqUvEALw_wcB
Made a good broccoli pasta sauce the other day, great way to get a lot of greens in. Just remember the ingredients say a cooked head of broccoli
next time Iād probably add some extra veg in it. We mixed in sun-dried tomatoes and was yum. Can sub anchovies for the miso paste.
I like the organic protein company banana flavour one. I dislike sweeteners intensely, so struggle with most of the vegan ones.
Great tip - Riverford has some brilliant recipes on their website. Iāve never had a duff one. You can search by vegetable if you have a glut of one thing ( we have an allotment so it happens often!). They often suggest substitutes if youāre veggie too.
Oh thatās good to know thanks @sam1204 , I only came across it for this recipe but will try it for others.
Hi All, this thread really got me thinking and reflecting on how much my diet has changed since my diagnosis in 2023.
Cancer made me eatā¦Chick peas, butter beans, lentils, quinoi, flaxseed, physillium husks, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, 85% dark chocolate, cacao powder, lotus root, seaweed granules, green tea, curly kale, cavolo nero, avocado, kimchi, kefir, pomegranate seeds, tofu, sourdough bread, sardines, salmon.
Cancer stopped me drinking alcohol, and chocolate milk, and stopped me eatingā¦ice cream, galaxy chocolate, Cadbury Creme eggs, Danish pastries, ham, mortadella, salami, crisps, pork scratchings, oven chips, frankfurters.
Cancer has not stopped me eating bacon but will look for some without nitrates, or sausages but I do check the ingredients list.
I love this list of things youāve added! Weāve definitely become a family of sausage snobs haha we always find the ones with the most meat %
Just curious, do you feel any different with this change if diet? Does it feel worth it?
I havenāt found it difficult at all. Itās a real culinary adventure!
I was greatly inspired by the nutrition sessions/ cookery demos I did with Penny Brohn over Zoom. Highly recommended. Fortunately I have always loved cooking and I have the time now that I am retired.
Do I feel better? ā¦well I gradually lost half a stone but itās a mental thing as well in knowing I am doing my best to keep my body functioning as well as possible as I was declared to be at high risk of recurrence after declining Paclitaxol, only doing half the course of Herceptin, and stopping Letrozole after 11 months.
I now run a monthly lunch club for other cancer survivors at my home. Putting the menus together is fun and gets me exploring recipes that are packed with really healthy ingredients. My latest experiment was quinoi bread. I also now grow broccoli sprouts which appear after just a few days after the seeds are sown. Most of my ideas come from You Tube Channels, Heart UK, and Penny Brohn. I also use the Zoe Food for Life cookbook for more ideas.
Chemo yesterday and nausea is back. Looking for tips on small heathy snack sized nibbles I can use as DH keeps asking what l could face. I think you can imagine my expression when asked about food plus the green round the gills look.
Did manage 1/2 cup plain porridge and one small banana after domperidone but blargh.
Needs to be bland, boring and small as I do not want to make the mistake of not eating again.
My go to at the moment seems to be tinned pineapple especially early chemo days. I know thats not bland but the sweetness for me seems managable and itās actually quite filling.
Smoothies, store bought are also good for me. They are so easy to drink. I try to stick with green ones as they are less sweet butI just throw it back quickly and it feels great to get it in me.
What about crackers/breadsticks with some cream cheese? That might be a good bland snack and you get some protein from the cheese.
Greek yogurt with a splash of honey is great also, I can eat that anytime of day
Also fresh blueberries, I can eat a whole box of them
Iām definitely seeing a fruit trend with me.
Oh and crumpets with some butter. Simple and delicious
Thank you, not sure l can face crumpets yet so opted for some plain white toast with a hint of butter and marmite as a snack. Plus a couple of brazil nuts (source of selenium) l looked at the cheese and went yak. Not ready for dairy yet. Reminding myself its better to eat something than nothing.
Absolutely especially the first week, anything counts. I was going to suggest marmite because one of the snacks I did enjoy last time was twiglets haha Not completely naughty though as they say they are high fibre!
I adore twiglets! Youāve given me an idea there @foxgem
.
Another dry cracker type idea @wibbles is rice or lentil cakes - often sold as āproteinā cakes. Sainsburys and M&S do them. I like the savoury ones, theyāre good with marmite or peanut butter, but also the rice cakes with dark chocolate on one side are a bit of a revelation - not too sweet (I donāt have a sweet tooth) and of course the dark choc is good for our neutrophils!
Another idea would be a cheese scone maybe?
Think I will ask DD2 to make a few plain scones and some cheese scones. she is very good at scones and TBH cooking this week is not a place I can go. Using the diary l keep to have an idea when l might be able to go into the kitchen without going green.
Baxterās Chicken Broth was okay as its about the only tinned soup that does not have tomatoes in and I have found a hidden pack of ready salted vegetable crisps (beetroot, parsnip and carrot) which has a little bit of taste and does not make me feel sick so nibbling them with water.
Itās not a great diet but itās better than living on plain hula hoops and ginger nuts. That turned out to be a mistake for the first week post chemo last time.
