Thought I’d share my pre-chemo breakfast today. Black coffee (antioxidants
), kefir protein plain yoghurt, defrosted frozen cherries (Sainsbury’s has a 3 for 2 offer making them affordable), kiwi and milled flaxseed. Loads of protein and fruit for neutrophils. Very quick and easy to put together.
DH cooked for me tonight as the kitchen is anathema still. Steak, GF Italian pasta and GF homemade mild cheese sauce with some carrots and beans. TBH the most I have been able to eat in three days. hurrah for domperidone.
This mornings breakfast was a 10/10 hit. Day 4 after chemo so I wasn’t sure how well it would go down but it was perfect.
Overnight cocoa oats
- 40 g (about ½ cup) rolled oats
- 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp chia seeds (optional, for extra texture and nutrition)
- 1 tbsp maple syrup or honey (adjust to taste)
- 150 ml (about ⅔ cup) milk of choice (dairy, soy, almond, etc.
- (I also added chopped walnuts and about 6 cut up prunes)
- Toppings (optional): sliced banana, berries, nuts, or coconut flakes
Made these in a bowl before bed last night, covered up with some clingfilm
Tips for truly wiped out blargh days.
discovered that having fruit tinned ready in its own juice is a life saving option for wipe out and bleurgh days. Added some tinned apricots to porridge and they were much easier to eat than the dried ones. tinned has the advantage of being instantly available when you do think you can eat something whereas frozen you have to take out and defrost first and that can loose the moment you feel able to eat.
porridge is a good fall back be that in the form of warm or overnight oats. IF swallowing is hard going thanks to mouth taste changes and nausea you can use a smoothie. IF you feel able to add some milk, a teaspoon of nut butter and about 10 g of porridge oats then blitz. keep cool in the fridge. consume cool. the oats will make this a thicker smoothie with a commercial milkshake consistency but it adds some protein, carbs and vitamins on days you really cannot manage much. you can also add silken tofu and advacado once you feel able to.
Soups, make sure it’s a good one that is similar to homemade. I have found Scully ones to be close to ones I would make at home, they do have some taste on taste free days and they are the closest commercial ones I have found to homemade soup. the alternative is to batch cook pre chemo or ask someone who is a cook to help by making you small batches to keep in the freezer. take them out and defrost overnight in the fridge.
Good bread that you can nibble. Ifyou feel brave try toasting and add some spread and marmite, if you feel very sick stick to dry white toast. IF you get the runs look for white bread and if the other way look for whole meals. [Remember Ìt is okay to call the hospital and ask for advice if either of those beauts ruin your life]
GIngery drinks can help, be Ìt tea, a simple tissane of fresh ginger root added to hot water, Belvoir or Greens ginger cordials, Ginger nuts or GF Without Wheat M&S ginger snaps.
if water tastes foul and hot drinks are awful its okay to add a cordial to water. if hot does not work try cool or cold, it’s important to keep drinking.
remember some food is better than no food and eating a little bit often can often feel better than feeling sick and hungry at the same time.
ONce you start to feel a bit better do look for other tips in this thread. YOu never know you might find something that helps.
It is okay to use ready meals if you cannot face the kitchen but try and buy in good ones or ask family and friends who can cook to help.
try and eat little and often if a meal is too much, try and eat a balanced diet of little and often over the day, ie. Slice of toast for a snack, soup for lunch, fruit and something with protein for afternoon snack..
All great advice above
. Just one add which is that when I have the nasty chemo taste (as I did yesterday and have today) I find fizzy water with cordial, or kombucha, are nicer than still cold drinks. Ordinary tea tastes awful so go for ginger or fruity.
Hiya is Kombucha ok to have then? I thought you couldn’t have that, or maybe it depends on what chemo you’re having. It’d be good to know as I like kombucha.
I think homemade kombutcha would be riskier than store bought. I had a store bought one the other week and it was a really nice change of fluids. I probably wouldnt drink it everyday but as a friday or Saturday treat. Haha living it up!
I’ve never been told not to have kombucha - the only thing I was told not to eat was takeaways! I like Fix8 as it just has a bit of sugar and no artificial sweetener. They do 3 flavours. I probably only have it twice a week.
Oh that’s good to know xxx
Maybe that’s where I got it from them. I’m guessing shop bought would have gone through the pasteurising process. x
Hello all. I have been reading up on food antioxidating, Polyphenol food. Yes a few days I havent to be honest the anxiety. Hasnt helped.
I think there are mixed opinions on eating live cultures due to bacterial risk, kefir/kombucha/kimchi etc.
I had some carrots looking at me from the fridge so I made hummus for the first time. High protein, high fibre
It tastes good, could be better. Consistency was a bit soft, I might have over blended. If there are any hummus experts I would welcome some amendments to the recipe. It was just a quick one I found online.
240g canned chickpeas
2 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp garlic powder (didnt have fresh)
pinch salt
4 tbsp water
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp paprika
I believe tahini is a big ingredient. X
I’ve just been informed of my error by a friend haha It’s gone on the shopping list!
In addition to tahini I would suggest juice of just one lemon. Also use the water(aqufarba) out of the chickpea can instead of tap water. I like to drizzle olive oil over the top of finished hummus and a good sprinkling of cayenne pepper.
Recipe can also be changed up by adding in roasted red peppers or cooked beetroot. X
Thank you for the advice. Already looking forward to my next try
Feels like a great guilt free snack with lots of benefits and I’ve chosen a good non nausea day to try it
Agree with the additions suggested. I make and eat loads of hummus. For a change add smoked paprika for a smoky taste. A little olive oil is also good - for taste and health ![]()
well done Foxgem, second the Tahini for you out and the options Sam suggested. most larger supermarkets stock it but you may need to search the world foods aisle. make it in small batches though as it does not keep for long even when kept covered in a fridge. ( I think three days tops but will ask DD the chef when she is back from work.)
