how long is it before taste comes back I had last chemo almost three weeks ago and because I have not been able to taste any of my food for weeks I am so fed up and would like to know when I can expect to actually taste food again
Bumping this up for flutterbybutterfly.

Hi I’m 6 weeks post chemo, taste buds not fully back so still struggling with certain foods… Was a real teapot before, now only drink coffee…Im lead to believe that foods you did eat through chemo, you may never eat again!
Ordered my first Indian takeaway in 6 months last week…it was delicious thankfully!
Hope it’s not too long for you

Hi Flutterbybutterfly! My taste came back gradually, and took ages (sorry!) but at least that meant I could enjoy each new returning taste rather than be swamped by everything. It’s taken till now (last chemo was 12 months ago) for my taste for wine to come back for example, but I remember the day I had a cuppa and a slice of toast and it tasted right, oh that was heaven…
Some foods I relied on heavily on chemo (porridge and mango (no, not together!!) ) I really don’t feel inclined to eat now, and some things that I never liked, like coffee, I now enjoy. So I hope that at least one of your favourite foods soon tastes right again for you
hi
ive found that stonger tastes are best, like a korma or lasagne, something with a bit of bite. you can only find out by trial and error really, ice creams ok, natural yoghurt, drinking chocolate, ginger bics, tomato sauce on chips, egg, sausage, etc but you only actually taste the ketchup Drinking coke is good, thats normal, but i never usually drink it.
its getting on my nerves a bit too, im on 3rd cycle so about 10 weeks, everything i used to enjoy seems to taste awful, not even bland - i could deal with that- its just a horrible taste. it does seem to dip first week and then gets a bit better, then goes again.
good luck testing
angie xx
Does not sound like a quick fix before I can fully taste all my much missed food and drink(indian, chinese, duck, chocolate, steak and my much craved for glass of asti spumante)but thank you all for the replies and I will just keep on experimenting and testing as suggested by Angie I just hope it is not too long as I am really struggling to eat anything at the moment as it all tastes like cardboard and my husband is fed up of my complaining thanks again xx
Just hang in there. I remember feeling exactly as you did and it took a couple of months before my taste buds returned to normal. It will happen though - I’m sure.

Thank you Jan for your reply as you say I just need to hang in there but I am not a patient person and I feel like this has gone on forever I have just had fish and chips for tea and it was awful but it smelt nice and I tried to convince myself that it was really tasty (without any success) I love your forum name take care x
I’m the same. On FEC-T and just had my last dose. No significant taste problems with FEC but with the T drug I have got worse and worse and had never realised how difficult it was to eat when everything tastes wrong. I find a lot of foods taste like you shouldn’t be eating them. Water, which I normally can’t stand, was the only thing I could drink for a week last time and I only ate Ready Brek which didn’t taste of much but was quick to prepare and went down OK. Even chocolate tastes wrong! Have now expanded my repertoire of things I can eat to tinned peaches with evaporated milk, both from the fridge. These slide down easily although no taste, but the evaporated milk gives the juice a nice creamy flavour.
My husband died of cancer and during his chemo he said everything had a metallic taste. How I nagged him to eat and how I understand now why it was so difficult for him.
