Change of plan

Hi everybody,

I had a unilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction 2 weeks ago and just received my biopsy results. Unfortunately they feel that after my chemotherapy & radiotherapy I will need to have both my skin and implant removed to decrease the chance of recurrence. However, they suggest not to have a reconstruction for a minimum of 2 years. Is that standard? I thought after treatment was completed I would be able to have the reconstruction. I’m really struggling psychologically with the idea. Thank you everyone for all your input!

Hi
I can’t help with your question as i didn’t have this type of surgery but i wanted to reach out and say well done for getting through this tough period and I’m sure others will share their thoughts and opinions but please call the nurses on here to seek answers and assistance or ask for the Someone Like Me service to help you
I hope your recovery continues

Hugs x

Hi @Curlywurly1

I am so sorry to hear about your changed plans - it is so difficult when that happens.

I wonder if the 2 years for reconstruction may be the waiting list in your area? I have just been put on the waiting list for delayed reconstruction, one year post surgery (with an expander implant) , and have been told that there is a standard wait of 12-18 months in my area.

I agree with @niya44 that it might be helpful for you to call your Breast Care Nurses as they will know your situation best.

Lots of love to you xx

Hi niya44,

You’ve gone through a lot, and now a change of plan on top of all that. Definitely get in touch with your BCN and nurse specialist. They should be able to explain.
Some breast cancers do come with a ‘full mastectomy and no immediate reconstruction for one or more years’ treatment protocol. Not all do. Maybe yours does and they only realised after analysing the results of the surgery. Your BCN should be able the shed more light in this you can also ask to speak to the surgeon or your oncologist.
I hope you have good support.
Big hug
