Changes to Fibroadenoma

Hi, I got diagnosed with a single fibroadenoma in my 20’s after having my first child. I’ve always been able to feel it and it’s been smooth and oval shaped and moveable when pressed. Suddenly at the age of 39 I can feel a small pea sized lump on top of it and possibly another lump on the edge of it (upper outter quadrant of left breast). I have a referral to the breast clinic next week but just wondering if after so many years this is normal for a sudden change? I should mention a few months ago I randomly had bleeding from the nipple that went away after a few days. I’m struggling to find information online about changes to fribroadenoma’s. Any advice greatly appreciated thank you.

Hello mummyto5,

Thanks for your post.

Fibroadenomas are common in women of your age group and can change in size and shape with hormonal changes.

Other breast changes, such as lumps and nipple discharge, can happen for many reasons. They may be due to injury, or to benign conditions (not cancer).

For more information see our booklet Know your breasts: a guide to breast awareness and screening.

It’s good to hear that you have an appointment at the breast clinic for your symptoms to be assessed. The breast team can assess the existing fibroadenoma you can still feel and the new changes including the lumps and bleeding from the nipple.
