Chemo and large groups of people?

Hello,

Due to start chemotherapy in September and have read about avoiding large groups of people.

Is this just at certain times or throughout?

Already mourning the loss of all the gigs I had planned this Autumn if so (byebye Suede&Manic Street Preachers, byebye Pulp, byebye Paul Heaton :sob:)

Thanks for the info!

I think this is probably down to your level of risk aversion. I still went to theatre trips but I did mask up and ask the theatre if I could have seats that were a little more out of the way. They did oblige and were really helpful. And as my oncologist said the infections are more likely to come from your body misbehaving than other people’s lurgy. He was right. I had emergency surgery at the half way point for a groin abscess that went south.

I didn’t have chemo so can’t advise BUT I can promise to sing and dance for you at the Suede/Manics gigs, if that helps. Hope you’re back in the mosh before too long.

It might be possible depending on how you are feeling and type of chemo/chemo cycle. If you contact the organisers you may be entitled to accesibility which can help avoid long ques and give access to toilets etc. You can also wear masks in crowded parts. If you are standing, maybe just go for the main headline and stand near the back and maybe leave before the last song. Oncology teams tend to support us living our lives during treatment. It is possible with a few adaptations

Hey @rosie7

I’m not surprised you’re devastated at the thought of missing out on seeing those legends! :sign_of_the_horns:

As others have said, it may be possible to go depending on what your regime will be and where the gigs land. Something to consider is that bigger events can obviously involve planning ahead so you might have to think about potential loss on tickets and any associated travel costs in case you end up in a situation where you find you can’t go at short notice. I recently went to a small family barbecue that fell on the day after a chemo round and I left after two hours, although I actually started wanting to leave after one, as I couldn’t keep my eyes open!

If it’s something you need to commit to in advance, it might be worth giving your BCN a ring and seeing what their thoughts are on it.

All the best. x

With my treatment I was advised to steer clear for a certain part of the cycle. Even my little dog was banned at those times. I think it depends on what you are having and how aggressively they have to dose you. Best to ask your oncologist.

My oncologist advised I avoid indoor spaces with crowds due to taking extra amounts of steroids to manage some of the gnarlier side effects and those suppressing my 8mmune system on top of the chemo effect and smaller children over the spring and summer due to this being the peak of chickenpox season. I have never had chickenpox even after looking after Dh and assorted kids when they had it. They also advised me to be careful of food and drink outlets unless l was very sure of kitchen and related food hygiene. That is simply down to just how hard side effects have been on my digestive tract as a whole. DD bought me concert tickets before Christmas and ended using them herself as at the time l literally had just had chemo and it was in a very large and packed venue so could not make any reasonable adjustment requests.

Hopefully if this I something you really do need to be extra careful of your oncologist and chemo nurses will both warn you and advise you further.

I have only very recently been able to think of day trips and a possible end of presurgery chemo short break before surgery. My oncologist has advised on where could be safe to stay, nearness to a regional cancer centre just in case side effects resurface as normally I would opt for fell walking at the back of beyond and the best time to think of trying to be away around impact of said side effects and surgeon planning around my known drug and related allergies. TBH having that atopic tendency really has been aggravated by chemo to the hilt and oncologist is sure that is why for me the side effects from the drugs has been so awful.
