Chemo finished still feel rubbish

Last, and final, chemo 3 weeks ago + 2 days. Pembro immunotherapy will continue, but paused for this week as surgery, lumpectomy and lymph nodes, next week, 5 days away. Why do I still feel so rubbish? Very very tired and nauseous. Sorry to be feeling so sorry for myself but I really thought I’d be getting energy back by now. Will they still operate if I’m feeling like this? Anaemia diagnosed. On Folic acid for just over 3 weeks. But not iron. Should I add in iron tablets? Tx for support.

It takes while with chemo. I didn’t start feeling better until about four weeks out and even then it came in fits and starts. One day I’d feel almost normal, the next day I’d be crying because I felt bad again and will it ever get better. It was about eight weeks until I started feeling better consistently and I only had four sessions of T/C. For harsher treatments it can take longer.

Thanks Kay. Oncologists vcagey about how long until chemo is out of system. I’ve had 6 months, the last 3 very nasty. As you say it seems to be up and down, yesterday was quite a good day, but today rubbish. Just fearing feeling like this and coping with surgery.

I started endocrine therapy while still not feeling completely recovered and it didn’t matter a bit. If your doctors feel okay about it then I would do it and just focus on getting better afterwards. It will happen.

Hi
Sorry you’re feeling so ill after chemo still, I can relate! Have you had bloods done to check you aren’t neutropenic? As that can make you very tired? I’m guessing bloods have been done if they’ve diagnosed anaemia. Is it worth a call to your BCN about your bloods - levels etc. has your surgeon had a look at your bloods and are they happy you are fit for surgery? The only reason I ask is my surgeon checked my bloods and put my surgery back by 2 weeks to give me more time to recover after chemo, so may be worth a check.

Bloods checked again yesterday, at my request. Very high creatinine serum level. Currently in a&e being checked out for kidney problems. But before surgeon’s assistant saw the blood test results she told me that the TNBC tumour margins were clear, so no more surgery needed. 20 out of 21 lymph nodes removed were clear. But unfortunately one still has cancer cells. So 3 weeks x radiotherapy won’t be the end of it. Probably some more chemotherapy, perhaps on a trial. And ongoing Pembro. When I asked her to explain the treatment again she said sthg like let’s get this kidney problem sorted first. Does anyone on similar TNBC treatment know what next steps are likely to be? Chemo before radiotherapy? Wishing I hadn’t asked for the wretched blood tests… Tx Sara

Acute Kidney Injury side effect still ongoing - but coming down well with steroids and antibiotics for another 11 days… Does anyone know how long radiation therapy and chemo can ‘safely’ be delayed? Will they wait until I’m clear. Nerve-wracking times.
