Chemo induced hot flushes, non hormonal BC - any advice!

Hi ladies

As the title suggests, I’m after advice about hot flushes triggered by chemo. Just wondering if any ladies not requiring hormone treatment after chemo can advise if they had hot flushes and how long they lasted.

My own flushes are daytime based but appear to be triggered by stress and external temperature changes. As soon as I start to feel hot, usually around the jaw and neck, I get itchy backs of hands and feel very unwell and sometimes have to have a lie down!! I rarely wake in the night sweating but am generally a lot warmer bodied than I ever was.  I am getting probably 6 to 8 a day and most of them I can alleviate by stripping off extra layers. I feel as if I no longer have control over my body temperature, although I have had my temperature taken by a nurse whilst having a mini flush, and it was completely normal. Sometimes my face flushes bright red but not all the time.  I am possibly perimenopausal but have had a hysterectomy so wouldn’t actually know.

Anyway, any non hormone BC ladies who had flushes triggered by chemo, if you could let me know how long your flushes lasted, I’d be grateful!

Hi Holeinone,

Thank you for getting in touch. I am sorry you’ve not yet had a response to your comment. I’m sure someone will be along shortly to continue the conversation.

In the meantime, if you’d like to chat with one of our breast care nurses, you can call them on 0808 800 6000. They are available during the week 9am-5pm and 10am-2pm on Saturdays.

Regards,

Dan

Hi Holeinone

I was post-menopausal when I had my chemo and I used to get the hot flushes

I mentioned it several times to the nursing staff  (I was in hospital quite often with neutropenic sepsis) -one of the chemo nurses suggested I have my temp taken ever time I had a flush… I just took it myself but it was never raised either!

Eventually, one of the Acute Care nurses said that some chemo drugs can cause rigors…hence, the hot flushes and suggested that was probably what the problem was!

I’m not sure if the info is relevant to your or the drugs you’re on but thats what I was told ?

Hopefully, you’ll feel better soon…
