Just a quick question, i know it maybe difficult to answer as everyone is different with SE’s but im due to start chemo a week tomorrow 21st November and was wondering about being able to drive.
My kids go to a small Village school about 10 miles away from where i live, will i still be able to drive them and pick them up, obviously if im being sick i won’t be able to but just wondered if it is safe to drive with fuzzy head etc
Very difficult to predict, my kids were a y4&y5 last year and I did the school run throughout (fec/tax) chemo apart from chemo day in hospital, probably wise to line up some friends and let school know just in case you run late or have someone else pick them up. Good luck!
I was ok driving during FEC but when i went onto TAX i did go to pick my son up from school and found i didn’t seem with it at all, my head just seemed really fuzzy and I did not feel safe at all.
also find in the first week that my words seem to be all mixed up so i now refuse to drive anywhere for the first week of tax, just for safety as I wouldn’t want to risk having an accident. Of course other people might find they are different
I was also OK during FEC but after Tax I got far too fuzzy headed and after my experience of the first one (driving through a red light without even seeing it, etc. etc.) I didn’t drive for about a week and a half after each one.
I’d definitely see if you can sort out some lifts and have friends on stand by. You might be fine, but you might not. And do let the school know. If they don’t already know about your cancer it’s a very good idea to tell them - BCC produce a publication to help you do it and to help the school to know how to talk to your children.
Definately agree you need to get a back up arranged. You may find you don’t need it, but there were 3 days every fec when i couldn’t think at all and just slept. I couldn’t concentrate to read a news paper, small tasks would exhaust me, there was no way I could possible have driven, or even looked after my primary school age children. Felt better on Tax, but still “not with it”. I found driving was out of the question for me during the first week of all my chemo cycles.
Good luck x
First week to week and half not able to drive fuzzy head not quite with it I would put something in place if I was you. Chemo no 4 I Neva drove at all. Hope this helps but we are all different so keep your friends close xx
