Chicken pox 😔

Hi,

I’m currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, will be having my last chemo session (5/6) next week on Wednesday but today my 3 year old daughter has come out in chicken pox

Is this something I should be worried about? My last two chemos I’ve had to go into Velindre for treatment as I had neutropenia sepsis and extremely bad sickness. I’ve just finished a course of at home anti biotics after having it through an IV in hospital 10 days ago.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Hello ER1990,

Thanks for posting.

It’s understandable to be wonder if you should be worried about your daughter’s chickenpox outbreak as you explain being on chemo and having had neutropenic sepsis.

Any risk to you would depend on whether or not you have had chickenpox yourself. Most people who have had chickenpox develop lifelong immunity to it and it’s rare to get it again. Some people worry about catching shingles from chickenpox, but this is not possible. Shingles is reactivation of the chickenpox virus in someone who has already had chickenpox.

Do contact your treatment team to see if there are any precautions you should take especially if you have not had chickenpox.
