Choice about radiotherapy and tamoxifen after successful WLE for low grade DCIS

Has anyone else had to choose about whether to have radiotherapy or whether to take tamoxifen with DCIS after a WLE? I have til the end of the week to decide! Can anyone help with any views?  I had no symptoms, but DCIS was found on my left side when I was called on the 47-50 mammogram scheme at the end of September. My WLE mid November was successful with good margins and I am recovering really well. After the results came back from pathology it is low grade DCIS, ER positive, and the hospital have given me a Van Nyss score of 4 (which I know is all really good news), hence my choice. I am age 47 and pre-menopausal. Thanks.

Hi busymum, glad you have joined the forum as you will get lots of support here. It’s great that your wle was successful and results good too. I was diagnosed with high grade DCIS in September. I have had a WLE and then a further excision to achieve clear margins. Today I have had my 5th session of 15 radiotherapy sessions. I am 49 and post menopausal and my DCIS was not tested for hormonal stuff as there was no invasive cancer found, so I don’t have to take hormone tablets. My consultant said that the radiotherapy is to reduce the already low risk of recurrence. I did think about not having it but then thought if it did come back I would always wonder why I didn’t have the treatment. So I know I am giving myself the best shot!! It is a very personal decision that can only be made by you. However, 5 sessions in I am doing ok and the whole radiotherapy thing is running smoothly and being delivered by lovely people. Hope this helps a little and good luck making your decision xxx
