I had a lumpectomy on 28th September to remove a small grade 1 tumour but the results have come back to say that they didn’t get clear margins and there is a tiny amount of cancer in my lymph nodes. My surgeon isn’t keen on doing another lumpectomy as she says all the tissues are soft and she no way to know how much to take, plus because I’m quite small she is worried that I would be left with a very misshapen breast. Initially I said I was happy to go for a mastectomy with reconstruction but having read about how many implants don’t work, how many people need additional surgery I’m not keen. She did seem to think I might be a candidate for a flap reconstruction but the skin on my stomach has a lot of stretch marks and when I had a C-section with my 3rd child the surgeon had to use a different type of sucher because the skin kept tearing, also the length of recovery with 2 primary school aged children, with autism to worry about puts me off. Yesterday I thought I’d go for a flat mastectomy but today I’m thinking of just trying another lumpectomy. How on earth does anyone make these decisions?? I’m going to see my breast cancer nurse on Wednesday so hopefully that will bring some clarity.
do use the someone like me option and ask the nurses her before Wednesdays appointment it could help you with decisions and options going forward. It’s difficult to make the decisions but others will pop on with their experiences I had a therapeutic mammoplasty and 6 years later got levelled up (in hindsite I would have had it all done at the time rather than delaying the levelling up) but my brain was very much in the get that out of me and was fully focused on that at the time. Others will pop on here to share but please do ring the number on here if you can prior to Wednesday it can help you with questions you might not have considered Shi xx
