Clock Ticking
Clock Ticking Hiya Everyone,
I wondered if anyone can shed some light on this question I’ve been pondering…
I’ve heard and read that BC is most likely to recur in the first 2 years and getting to 5 years is a good sign (though we’ll never be out of the woods).
Anyway does anyone know when the clock starts ticking as it were?
Is it from diagnosis, or from the end of chemotherapy…
The difference between mine being 7 months, quite a chunk.
Still on herceptin til Jan next year…
Thanks. Best Wishes.
Love Linda xx
A difficult one… Hi Linda
The five year mark refers to five years after the date of diagnosis. However I don’t put too much emphasis on this date because breast cancer, unlike many other cancers, can recur 20 years after original diagnosis and also because a lot of us have breast cancer for many months and even years before we are diagnosed by which time our cancer could be at any stage.
I probably developed breast cancer four years ago and was diagnosed almost two years ago (aged 30). I have wrestled over the five year thing myself and have basically come to the conclusion that as I’m still alive and well now things are ok.
Hope this helps

Can never be sure but be sure you’re fine now Hi Linda
I agree - there’s all sorts of stuff about 5 year and 20 year survival rates, etc. but b.c. can come back anytime - you hear about people getting the all clear and get more cancer almost straight away and others who go on for yonks to die at a ripe old age of something unrelated. And everything in between.
I don’t think I will ever feel safe from cancer but maybe at least that means, like LiverBird, as far as I can if I like a dress I buy it, and I’m going on that holiday, and I’m drinking that champagne and seeing friends and trying hard to do what I really want to do and not bothering with any rubbish in my life - and do it now, don’t put it off.
Have fun!

H Linda I asked my oncologist this very question and the clock starts ticking on the day of diagnosis.
He said most bc recurs in the first two years and after that the recurrence rate drops dramatically.
Hope this helps.
