Hello wintersun1,

Thank you for posting.

It’s understandable that you’re worried about your sister’s risk of breast cancer. However, being diagnosed with breast cancer does not automatically mean your sister is at a greater risk of developing breast cancer in the future.

Most breast cancers aren’t inherited. There are only a small number of people who will be at a greater risk of developing breast cancer because they have a significant family history. The biggest risk factors for developing breast cancer are being a woman and increasing age.

If your sister is concerned that your family history is significant, she can talk to her GP.

It’s helpful if she can find out as much information as possible about your family history on both your mother’s and father’s side of the family, before this discussion. Our information about family history risk assessment explains what details her doctor needs to know in order to assess her.

If the information suggests she may have a significant family history, she’ll be referred to either the local family history clinic or a regional genetic centre (depending on what’s in her local area). Here her risk will be assessed further.

If your sister is assessed as being moderate or high risk of developing breast cancer, she will be offered breast screening with a mammogram and/or MRI scan (called surveillance). The age at which this starts and which type of scan is used will depend on her level of risk.
