Hi All
Can anyone advise me why it is good to drink coke after a bone scan? I have heard that you should but don’t know the reasons why?
Thanks

Hi Sukes
I read your posts all the time but have never got to reply to one! Feel like I really know you, our circumstances are similar. Same age kids, similar diagnosis, same chemo although think I was a month or two ahead of you as I finished last August and more recently same gynae issues!!! Is nice to feel i’m not alone!
Anyway back to your original question , I was just thinking about this the other day. In her book Jane Plant says she always drinks several glasses of cola because it “contains phosphoric acid to try and encourage my body to exchange the radioactive phosphates for the non-radioactive phosphate compunds in the cola”
I found her book quite interesting but not enough to change my diet completely. This seems an interesting opinion on ridding oneself of any lasting effects of the contrast used in scans. I’m not sure it’s 100% necessary as I don’t know of any treatment centres that recommend this but it’s certainly something so simple I wouldn’t imagine it could possibly do any harm?
Good luck with your scan

Hi
I’m afraid the phrase “contains phosphoric acid to try and encourage my body to exchange the radioactive phosphates for the non-radioactive phosphate compunds in the cola” reeks of pseudo-science to me. I’m not very well-informed about Jane Plant, but the little I’ve read puts her in the category of purveyors of snake oil!
One thing I have read about excessive cola consumption, though, is that it may leach calcium from your body & so reduce bone-density. That may be worth looking into.

Wow - several glasses of coke a day!?? Has Jane Plant got any teeth left after that? Coke literally erodes away dental enamel, so what does it do to the rest of you? Sounds very dodgy.
Not every day! just after she’s had a bone scan. She goes to GREAT lengths in her book to tell you she never touches the stuff at other times. LOL! every day! Her diet is so restrictive I’d be amazed if she allowed herself a decent cup of tea (one that contains caffeine)…
I remember doing an experiment when I was a kid - we took a really dirty bronze coin and dunked it in coke for 5 minutes. It comes out shining like new - same happens with tomato ketchup. Amazing what sugar can do.
Anyway - Jane Plant? Utter twaddle.
Coke is a very useful form of “rehydration salts” if you have had bad vomiting and diarrhoea - as any seasoned Asian backpacker will tell you!
All thanks for your comments. I just wanted to know if it was medically proven and what the benefits are as i’m not really a great coke drinker. Like it now and again but not very often.
Also if i have another bone scan i will know what to drink!.
Thanks all
