help. i am using cold cap and having fec treatment. i had my third dose last week and was dreadful almost sick there. it was the smells of everything that effected me sweet smells. they use the dove conditioner and this effected me so bad i had to stop cold cap and get home. a week on i have washed my hair and used dove shampoo and i was reaching its a sweet smell. oh by the way i had washed hair before but used other shampoo. please can anyone tell me what conditioners there hospital used and or is there any non smelling ones… i can buy and take with me… thanks

What a horrible experience. My hospital used Dove on me too and it really does have an incredibly strong sweet smell and I’ve almost gone off it now because of that. the reason they used Dove was because the PH is neutral and is very gentle on your hair. The only other conditioner which I think is PH neutral is something like Aveda. I don’t think most supermarket brands are.

Sorry Julie I have no idea what to look for but I do know you can buy Aveda from some department stores. I think it’s all very natural stuff.
can i ask what you use conditioner for (daft question probably) I have not seen anyone using it!

when i was having chemotherapy, I tried using the cold cap to preserve my hair (it didn’t work by the way). Before the cap is put on, the nurses dampen down your hair and comb it through with conditioner and then put the cold cap on. I think this must be to protect your hair from the freezing cold.

i am on fourth dose of fec now and so far cap working perfectly. i only lost about 6 hairs more than normal when washing hair. last fec couldnt stand cap took off hour early. i have lost no more than a dozen hairs each time ive brushed or washed hair. they smothered my hair in conditioner to perserve it and the sweet smell was awlful i need something else. i will look for aveda on line thanks for advice.

I use the cool cap and I have used dove leave in but then I found GHD leave in conditioner in a spray, its got a kind of washin up liquidy clean smell, and it does a great job, dont know if this is any help it may be worth a try

I don’t use the cold cap but use tresemme conditioner every day and it doesn’t smell much
why don’t you just to go a chemist and take the tops off and have a sniff ??? and see what appeals to you ???
perhaps you could look for some hypoallergenic products - they may be perfume -free
like you I had a heightened sense of smell on FEC and couldn’t STAND my husband’s antipersperant
if he put it on upstairs in the bedroom I could smell it al over the house - even in the kitchen downstairs - it was vile so i know what you mean

glad i wasnt going mad. myhusband in the shower and that CLEAN smell made me reach for the sink i could smell it all day. washing powders infact anythingto do with being clean… i went to local chemist and asked about chemo and ph neutrals he thought i was mad. i have appt with oncologist fri so will ask her… and if time pop into chemo unit. i just know i cant stand it next week.

is the conditioner you use for cold cap ph neutral. i dont know what this means but i know someone else mentioned it on here and i remembered my chemo nurse saying its got to be ph neutral. cold cap is working so far.

the other thing that made me reach on FEC was washing up liquid !!! it smelled of cat pee!!! totally revolting .!!!good excuse for not doing the dishes!! … good luck FB xxx
