I’m planning on cold capping and just need some pointers on products and routines to use.
I had a consultation with Daniel field today, and in all honesty I’m just about to loose a lot of income so if I could spend a little less that would be great!
What is everyone using and what is their routine??
I’ve been cold-capping for 7 weeks now, my hair has definitely thinned, before treatment started I had my hair cut to below chin length, this was to reduce the weight, and make it easier to manage- no more knots!
Hair washing wise, I always wash it on treatment day as it’s full of conditioner - whichever the hospital has to hand. I then wash again mid-week using Faith in nature and very tepid water!
1/2 an hour before my appointment I take two paracetamol (after checking my temp) this does help dull the ‘ice cream’ headache sensation, it’s quite intense for the first 10/15 minutes along with the pressure from the neoprene cap- by the end my jaw is achy!
Hi o started my treatment in August I managed 2 sessions cold capping however my hair was just falling out had it cut gradually short to a crop. In the end last Week (I am on a three weekly chemo) following advice I got it shaved and collected my wig. To be honest best thing I have done feel in control now. Went for my chemo on Wednesday and got 1 1/2hours of my life back not sitting there with the cold cap.
It is worth trying and see what happens I just washed mine once a week in luke cold water simple shampoo no hair dry natural dry… I looked like Monica from friends in the end.!!
You will need to buy some cheap conditioner, they put this on before the cold cap. Make sure you have a nice warm blanket or hoodie , it gets a little cold. Persevere with it if you can , it does work good luck the nurses are great x
Hi I cold-capped back in 2022 and only 505 of my hair was lost, but not that noticeable.
If you haven’t yet started it helps to know how much hair you collect in your hair brush as the norm. plus when you wash your hair don’t use hot only tepid water, and the same warm or cool hair drier, this protects your hair. I took my own conditioner and a turban to wear post treatment. We were offered a free wig by Christies to have through Macmillan, just in case. But neither my sister nor I ever used them, we didn’t need to. Don’t be tempted to buy anything special, just using your normal shampoo is suffice. Even now sadly there are too many companies trying to get you to spend on fancy goods. ‘Better the devil you know’, and that will save you money.
Like the ladies above have said its the first 10 mins which are the worst, but you will get through that and the routine, as for the paracetamol, i always took mine prior to treatment which does help, especially on the first session, as you have so much information to take in, the post treatment medication they give you the injections you have to take for 5 days. i visualised a clock so placed mine at a different number each day, that way you have less pain or bruising. You will get through this. lastly look forward to a date in the future, my friend suggested i look forward to Wimbledon.
Ask me more if you wish and i have replied to some of the starters in September, that’s the other help i was advised some of your questions may already have been answered in starters before you ie if you are an october starter look back at september and august.
We women are strong and you will get through the support you have from this site is outstanding and the BCN even more so, don’t ever be afraid to ask. Love and light Moonsox xxx.
I had my first chemo last Wednesday and used the cold cap. Didn’t find it difficult at all, but am now worried that it wasn’t tight enough. Used Daniel Field’s stuff but I struggle with the smell of it, it’s kinda metallicy mint and I felt so unwell after the first day I couldn’t wash it off and it was quite horrible. I will try to stick to it, but it’s too early to say if it’s working. I would second taking 2 paracetamols 15-20 mins before the start and would also suggest you have a band to put over your forehead to keep it warm. Good luck to everyone trying xx
