This is a bit of a vent, and maybe an ask for some opinions. I went to pick up my final 3 months of abema, woohoo! This should be an exciting time, right? I admit, it probably would have been better to wait for the phone call to say they were ready but, I don’t normally and they are generally ready when I get there. The phone call appointment was the day before at 9.30 and I got there at 12.30. Anyhow, I went to the window, gave my details. Now it’s normally there waiting for me or most I’ve waited (apart from the first time) is half an hour. The guy proceeded to give me a ticket and tell me the wait was an hour and a quarter
I told him they are normally ready and is he sure they’re not - even when they are not ready, I am not normally given a ticket. He had a mooch around and said they were not ready. Off I went for a spot of lunch in the hospital cafe. I came back and my number was showing as ready, got to the hatch and he proceeds to hand me a tiny bag with something slim inside. Had I got it wrong? Did I only have a month left
I asked, is that 3 months worth? He told me it was one weeks worth of antibiotics! Whhaat? I thought. He checked it was me on the prescription and it was but definitely not my prescription! He had to check with oncology and they hadn’t sent my prescription through yet, aarrgghh! Was told would be another half hour
half hour later I get my actual prescription, he then asked if I wanted the antibiotics as they were on my file? I declined as pretty sure they were not meant for me.
What next though, do I email my follow up team and explain what happened? Should I have taken the antibiotics as well? Why was it on my file? You’re not supposed to take abema and antibiotics together anyway, how did this happen? Should I also email the pharmacy? Not sure what I would say to them though.
Thanks for reading, if yoy got this far! Wishing you all luck in your journeys ![]()

I would contact your BCN or Oncology Nurse / team in the first instance and explain what has happened. It may be something they need to
Investigate internally as if you don’t need antibiotics which sounds possible then it could be a prescribing error a dispensing error possibly a confusion of you and your details with someone else’s. Either way that would be what we would call a near miss. If this had happened to somebody perhaps new to the regime they might have just taken them home and not realised they were on the wrong treatment.
If you are supposed to take the antibiotics then surely someone would have told you - but your team should be able to tell you and if you still have the antibiotics I personally wouldn’t take them without some sort of confirmation . If the Pharmacy allowed you to leave without them then I think it’s likely that they’ve realised it’s a mistake of some kind but again I think it’s best to check.
Can you remember the name of the antibiotics and the dosage ? That might have a bearing on how it’s happened .
In the meantime it’s a Bank Holiday and you are on your very last prescription of Abemaciclib - so you can allow yourself a Woohoo! moment. Xx
Sometimes they just don’t care.
prayers for you and all💕
I think he wanted me to take the antibiotics but I refused. I didn’t see what drug it was or the dosage, he asked if i had a skin infection or similar. I will email the follow-up team, as have been discharged from oncology apart from the stratified follow up and obviously my yearly mammograms. I hadn’t thought about someone new on the regime just going with it.
Definitely feels good knowing it’s the last 3 months, fingers crossed
I won’t have to take them again or similar, although I’m also worried about not taking them ![]()
You should also have a access to a BCN for 5 years - they may be able to look into it for you . Yes it’s an odd feeling coming to the end of active treatment - you want to feel Woohoo! but often you don’t to begin with . Xx
I’m not sure I have a bcn, I don’t really remember being introduced to one. There was a nurse at one appointment who was there to talk to me about the op and what would happen but I don’t think I was ever given any contact details. I just have the follow-up teams email and number, I met one of them a year after chemo and given their details. Pre surgery I would ring the breast care nurses but never had one specific person to speak to xx
Just wanted to give an update. I emailed my follow up team and had a call back from pharmacy to say they are investigating it. The pharmacist that phoned me said she couldn’t see any prescription for antibiotics on my file, so is having trouble finding who would have prescribed them. She also mentioned that she was glad I stood my ground and refused to take the antibiotics and wait for my abema.
Anyway, they are looking into it.
Yes well done you . It’s good that you got some closure and that they’re on investigating it as well xx
