Concerns breast size

Hi all,

I am 33 years old, and have recently reported a sudden change in my left breast. It is much bigger than usual, and much bigger than my right breast. There is also a small cyst underneath, but it is soft and my doctor isn’t too concerned about it. The GP has said my left breast is around 50% bigger than the other. She prescribed a 7 day antibiotic but the swelling remains and so does the small cyst looking thing too. I went back again this morning and GP has prescribed a stronger anti biotic and asked me to return on 20th for further follow up.

I guess I’m just posting here to see if anyone’s had anything similar? Main symptoms are sudden change in breast size, small cyst lump under breast and some tenderness in the breast too. GP has said no swollen nodes. I’m worried about it and wish my GP would’ve just referred me to breast clinic when the breast didn’t return to normal size. But I understand the services are so busy, so I guess if she isn’t worried I maybe shouldn’t be. But I am, it’s such a noticeable difference in size…any info is appreciated.

Thanks xx

Hello, welcome to the group and sorry you have these concerns.

It’s good that you have been to see your GP - I am surprised they did not just refer you to the breast clinic. I think it may vary among surgeries but my GP policy is to refer.

I think it’s very difficult to know exactly what’s going on without the breast clinic taking a look and the various tests they do.

Even among the experts, they don’t know until the results are back. I had a lump (the GP estimated at 6cm which frightened the life out of me) but was actually 3cm. It was a cancerous lump but the breast consultant initially said it could be a cyst, or something else, and nothing was confirmed until the mammogram and ultrasound.

Everyone is different but I would be asking for a referral to the breast clinic on the two-week pathway just to put your mind at ease. Most lumps are not cancerous but the worry is very difficult.

Hope all goes well for you xx
