Hello! I wondered if a nurse could help me. I recently detected a lump in my breast and went straight to the gp. I was referred under the 2 week nhs wait but in between this I attended a general ultrasound clinic (private) to help with the anxiety of the wait of the two week appointment. The private scan showed cysts and an ‘impression of a Fibroadenoma’. I then went to my nhs scan with a breast consultant radiographer who only identified cysts. I shared the report with her from the private scan with images and findings of an impression of Fibroadenoma and she checked me again. She said no evidence of this and only cysts. I am now worried something has been missed somewhere - or am I overthinking this and should be happy that both scans showed benign findings? Thank you. X
Hello rosie123_w
Thanks for posting. It can be really difficult when you receive conflicting information after any type of investigation, and it’s natural to overthink in these situations. However, it’s good to hear that neither scan showed anything of concern.
Both breast cysts and fibroadenomas are common benign (not cancer) breast conditions, and can usually be seen on an ultrasound. It sounds as if both radiologists were confident that your scan showed only benign changes, even though their findings differed slightly. After an appointment at the hospital your GP would usually receive a letter or a report with the results of any scans, and this may help you understand the findings more. It may help to make an appointment with your GP to discuss this.
It’s good to hear you are breast aware and went to the GP having noticed changes in your breast. If you haven’t already you may find it helpful to read about the signs and symptoms to look out for, and do continue to report any future changes you may notice.
