Constant Hunger!!!

Hi

I would like to know if anyone else has the problem of being hungry all the time!!! I have steroids but only for 5 days once every 3 weeks. This is due to change to only 3 days once every 3 weeks. So I don’t think I can blame the steroids. Since starting chemo I am just always hungry. My appetite is ridiculous. Subsequently I have piled on the weight and am not happy!! I am not working at the moment so I do think once I get back to work this will help the weight drop off. But for now it’s doing nothing for my self esteem!!!

Look forward to hearing from you

I ate like a ‘horse’ when I was on chemo - My tummy was always rumbling and wanting more food. I ate really healthily though and didn’t succome to chocolate/snacks ect but ate loads of fruit and veg and ‘filled up’ on pasta and potatoes. I did have lots of puddings though with custard!! I never used to like puddings or custard. It was strange as although I lost my taste buds I was still ravenous! so I ate food that i couldn’t really taste - although the sweeter things did taste nicer (as my taste buds could recognise ‘sweet’).

I never put on weight, in fact I lost nearly 2 stone and I have kept it off - not sure how I did that as it goes against the norm I think.

Know exactly what you mean. I lost weight at the beginning of this year (planned) and so far have put 2/3rd’s of it back on. Part of this is due to eating lots, not only hungry but indigestion is helped by keeping something in my stomach and also not working I have the time to eat 3 meals a day plus snacks. I think not working for me has meant less activity so my metabolism has slowed so i’m not burning it off, it’s just going straight to fat. I am trying not to stress out about it and am just planning that from Easter next year, which i have been told is when I can and will have energy to go back to gym i will try to lose it all over again. At the moment if eating keeps me happier, now have a really sweet tooth, I just go with the flow,

Hi

I ate constantly on fec but not so much on tax. I can’t really blame the steroids as you get more with tax. I have put on nearly a stone and a half since chemo started. At the moment am too tired to do anything about it. I do t think being less active helps either. Debx

I am on FEC to, and have taken on board cravings, have put nearly 7lbs on,I struggled for years to keep my weight at target, I run 10ks and up to 15-20miles a week, now I cant walk to the bus stop!!Not good for self esteem…

I think putting on weight during and after treatment for breast cancer is very common, for lots of the reasons listed here and which I fully identify with. I think in many ways we end up in a vicious circle - we eat because we feel hungry or need to have something in our stomachs to ward off nausea, then the increased weight plus drug side effects limit our energy and mobility levels leading to more weight gain…

I try to eat healthily, but still have a treat mentality where it feels nice to eat something special once in a while!

Hi Bird

Just wanted to say that I love your pirate photo - Johnny Depp is filming the next pirate movie just down the road from me in Greenwich at th emoment, and apparently walks his dog in our park in the evening. I’ve been over there every night but no sightings yet!

Re the weight - I found a lot of my chemo weight was water retention that came off quite quickly at the end (most of it in one night - 6 visits to the loo!).

so glad theyres others as naughty as me. i too feel hungry all the time or am constantly thinking of food. i am only on a low dose of steriod which i take in the morning, but professionals keep telling me not to worry, i have ascites in my tummy lining which is very uncomfortable, it stops appetite in some, but just seeems to increase my appetite.
i find i dont eat big meals, but want to eat every few hours.
i have been concerned but then i think too heck with it, dont seem to be able to control it so let it go. one good thing when i have fluid drained i can lose more than a stone! in a day, which soon fills up again unfortunetly.
all we can do is deal with it the best way possible, take care all

Hi

Finty - OMG! The delicious Mr Depp just down the road - holy cow I would be out walking ALOT! The man is just gorgeous! as you can tell from my photo myself and my husband are somewhat obsessed with pirates of the caribbean and I am a little obsessed with Mr Depp - yes he is completely gorgeous but I also think he’s a fantastic actor.

Thanks to all for your comments. I feel a bit comforted knowing that I am not alone in my weight gain! I am starting to feel like a small hippo! I do think once I get back to work it will help. Walking around the ward for 8 hours a day should do the trick!! But it’s doing nowt for my mental health! Honestly the treatment is such a bugger. Now do I go shopping for bigger clothes or do I just wait it out and hope that I fit into my current wardrobe soonish, mmmmm what a dilemma!

I wish I could stick to just healthy stuff. I do eat alot of fruit and other healthy stuff but I just can’t keep out of the naughty section of the fridge!!! will power is somewhat lacking at the moment. Oh well I suppose it could be a lot worse, I could be throwing up all the time and turning into a skeleton - which is not a good look!

Stay positive girls and I hope that all of us who have gained all this weight soon shed it all and return to our svelte (but curvy) happy selves!

He won’t ever get these but - big kisses to the gorgeous Mr Depp - come to Oxford pop in for a cuppa!

Hi Bird

My next door neighbours saw him yesterday in full costume - but still no sightings for me:( He also turned up unannounced at a local school, after one of the pupils had written to him - he does seem to be a really classy guy.

HI finty

I saw the video on the BBC news site of Johnny Depp turning up at that school. How cool was that! How many other hollywood stars would do that. What a gem he is. I still think he needs a visit to Oxford!!
