Hi everyone, I’ve been suffering with constipation now for just over a year, it started with the chemo and eased a little but was still problematic. 8 months ago I was prescribed some powder that you mix with water, unfortunately this was disgusting and I struggled to take it. A month ago after still struggling I was prescribed docusate sodium for a month. This was good and while not back to normal I am much better. When I rung up for a repeat prescription the receptionist said I would have to speak to the doctor as I think she said it was an ‘acute item’. Not knowing what this meant I googled docusate sodium. On one site It says you shouldn’t take this for long periods as it can result in damage. One page suggests no longer than a week. The doctor said I was fine to have another months prescription, but now I’m worried I’m doing more damage than good. Has anyone ever used this and if so for how long? The tablets come in a bottle with no leaflet so I feel rather uninformed on them. Any advice would be appreciated.
Hi Roadster,
I’ve not taken Docusate so can’t really speak from personal experience but I work in a pharmacy and we do see It regularly on repeat prescription. You can find patient information leaflets on
Just search for Docusate or the brand name Dioctyl. Your pharmacy should also be able to print you the leaflet too.
Hope that helps a bit!
