Could it be a second primary aged only 41?

Hi all,
I was diagnosed in 2022 with TNBC, had a complete response to chemo, finished treatment in Dec 22. I was 39 years old, now I am 41.

Last week I found another lump after a gym session (shooting pain) in the other breast. I’ve been to see my consultant. He felt this and as there was no radiographer available had a look in the ultrasound himself. He said it did not look like a cyst. He seemed worried and has sent me for biopsy which is happening tomorrow.

All my genetic tests came back clear in 2022. Could this really be another primary breast cancer again? I am young and healthy. I exercise. I don’t smoke and I limit alcohol. Of course I knew there was a chance of a reoccurrence but my consultant has explained this would be a new primary as it’s in the other breast, not a reoccurrence.

I am sorry you are in this situation. It’s absolutely horrible waiting for results and I hope you don’t have to wait too long. Unfortunately there’s not always an obvious cause for these things; hoping you don’t get further bad news.

Outcome from today:

  • nothing visible on mammogram
  • ultrasound showed 2 areas. She said one has similarities to a fibroadenma and did not look like a typical breast cancer
  • the other she thought looked like a small cyst.

Both were biopsies. The one she thought looked like a cyst didn’t burst during biopsy so I assume it couldn’t be that.

The doctor said I was 4/6 on ultrasound scoring which means it is more likely to be cancer than not. She went on to explain that it could be a regional recurrence or a new breast cancer. Both are unlikely but possible.

Despite what the radiographer said she didn’t seem to think fibroadenima likely.

So now an agonising 2 week wait but it seems very likely that this is more cancer to deal with.

Oh Mathsmum. What a horrid day you’ve had. As you say, a further agonising wait until you know something definite. I know it’s a cliche, but it is so good that you have sought help so swiftly, and as you sadly know, the
medical team are the ones best placed to look into it thoroughly and if there is to be a treatment plan, to work that out. I so hope that it is not the case though. Hang on in there - we’re all here for you and are hoping for the best possible news xx

Hi again @mathsmum. How are you? Sincerely hope you’re okay and that your results were better than you’d been thinking. Sending best wishes.

Thanks for checking in. It was bi-focal triple negative, no lymph nodes. I’ve had my Masectomy and am now waiting chemo. I’ve gone into sertraline to help with the anxiety. Thanks for messaging xx
