Does anyone know if we are offered counselling after a double mastectomy??

Dear Claspe, Support should be offered to you, at all times speak with your breast cancer nurse, she will be able to arrange or point you in the right direction for your area.

Wishing you well, lots of luck with your surgery.

Hi, i think you are having your treatment at Jimmy’s? There is a Maggie’s centre on site which is worth a visit and can offer you a whole range of support. Best wishes.

Thankyou yeh im at Jimmy’s ive been to Maggies and I was surprised that they didnt have a single book about breast cancer or mastectomy among about 500 books so that left me feeling a bit let down, maybe I should give them another try and also im gonna speak to my BCN, thanks for your reply x

Hiya im also at Jimmy’s. I havent used support services yet this time around but when I had it last time (21yrs ago) I found the Robert Ogden centre invaluable. It offered alsorts of helpful advice and some therapies. They used to have a wig service as well but not sure now. I believe it is still there and availableto us. Its tucked away to the right of Gledhow Wing. It was free parking back then but very limited. Might be worth you having a wander down next time you’re there. Or give them a ring.

Good luck with your treatment xx

Hiya susynight, I’m feeling like one of the lucky ones at the min as I don’t need chemo or radio therapy will have to wait for the pathology results after my mastectomy, do you mind me asking why are you going through treatment again after 21years??

Hiya fingers crossed for your pathology. When is your mastectomy? Hope you dont have to wait too long. I was the same. I originally had a mastectomy and reconstruction and that was it. This year I developed a lumpy area in my reconstruction which turned out to be a recurrence of IDC Grade 2. So this time had WLE, radiotherapy and now on Anastrozole. Hopefully that’ll be it for a year although my old reconstruction hasn’t taken too kindly to being disturbed! Xx

Oh dear that’s sounds terrible, did you have reconstruction with your own tissue, like your tummy fat?? I have my mastectomy both boobs next wed 3rd Dec but I am going flat no reconstruction. How did you get breast cancer again in a reconstruction? Sorry for all the questions it just seems so unfair after you have been through so much already!!!

Good luck with your surgery. The lovely ward staff will look after you. I wanted to go flat first time round but surgeon would only do single mastectomy at the time so rather than be lopsided I opted for a LD skin flap with implant reconstruction. Its been fantastic for many years and I havent felt like id ever had a mastectomy really. This recurrence was hiding in skin flap & fat necrosis id had for a good few years. I got it checked because it was getting lumpier. Glad I did! Xx
