Hi. I have just tested positive for Covid. I had a lumpectomy in March and finished my 2 weeks of radiotherapy about 1 month ago. I didn’t have any chemo. Am I more at risk now? I’m no longer feeling the effects of the radiotherapy, so presumably my body’s back to normal!
I wouldn’t have thought so, but covid is really doing the rounds just now. I know loads of people who have it and seems a harsh varient too. Hope you feel better soon.
Dear AB78,
What a shame you have gone down with Covid after getting yourself over radiotherapy so well.
I’m just getting over it myself, I am now testing negative, but not feeling great at the moment, there is a lots around.
Wishing you well, with lots of health and happiness ahead.
Hugs Tili
According to the NHS website we have compromised immunity from radiotherapy for up to 6 months. I read this when deciding whether or not to have a covid booster. I hope it passes soon x
After radiotherapy , your immune system is repairing the damage caused .
I’m 4 weeks post radio and had a mild cold this week .
We are eligible for a Covid booster but I think they end 30th June .
I guess they think it won’t be around in summer , but it is .
I’ve not been offered one .
I had lumpectomy and radiotherapy in june last year. Since then been given pneumococcal vaccine, shingles vaccine and both winter and spring covid booster. I am 54 with no other health concerns. I think it depends on GP what they offer
Contact your GP surgery and treatment team and NHS 111 if nothing else available as you may be eligible for free anti virals . I had these 3 months after radiotherapy when I tested positive for COVID for the first time . There does seem to be some confusion around the system though. Hope you feel better soon xx
Hello ab78
Thanks for posting.
Although the effects of radiotherapy to the breast can last a while after treatment has finished, radiotherapy does not affect the immune system, so you shouldn’t be at an increased risk of developing viruses such as COVID for this reason.
Radiotherapy for other types of cancer may affect immunity.
There is some news about a spike in covid cases recently, but national data is no longer collected in the way we used to, as far less testing takes place now.
Here is more information about the COVID vaccination. Do speak to your treatment team about any vaccines you may be eligible for.
