Covid Jab Eligibility

Hi everyone, I’m Jos, this is my first time posting although I have been lurking for a little while :slightly_smiling_face:

I was diagnosed with TNBC last Nov - luckily caught early, small lump and no spread. WLE in Dec, and I completed chemo in early May with radio in June. My onc recommended I get the spring Covid booster jab, which I did, just before I started radiotherapy. I’d like to get the next booster jab too but I’m not sure if I’m eligible, having finished all my treatment a few months ago now. I asked my BCN if I would be, and she told me she didn’t know…just wondered if anyone on here had any ideas? How long is your immune system compromised for after finishing chemo??

Dear JW

Welcome to the forum, well done for getting this far.

I think you are eligible for the Covid and Flu jab, was wondering if you called you GP surgery they would be able to confirm.

wishing you well, going with forward with health and happiness

Hi JW1981

Thank you for posting.

It’s understandable that you are wondering if your recent diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer means you are eligible for an autumn covid vaccine.

Although it’s difficult for us to comment on individual cases, as far as we know, the majority of people who have had breast cancer will not be at any higher risk of developing Covid. This includes those who have finished chemotherapy for breast cancer. This is because your white blood cells usually return to normal levels within a few weeks of chemotherapy finishing and you are therefore no longer immunosuppressed.

You can read more about who is eligible for autumn covid vaccinations in this information. From 18 September, the NHS will start to invite people in priority order of risk and those eligible will be able to book an appointment on the National Booking Service. If you are unsure whether you meet the criteria for a booster vaccination it may help to talk with your GP as @Tili suggests.
