Critical Illness Cover

Hi there,

I am a year out now from diagnosis and have just realised that I have Critical Illness Cover attached to my mortgage. I have phoned the insurance company, Clerical Medical; they were very nice and told me to make a claim as each one is decided on an individual basis. Has anyone else left it for a year before claiming and then actually been paid out?

Don’t want to get my hopes up if it’s unlikely.

Any info gratefully received

Hi Janeyb

Jumping on board here - am just about to make a claim for loan insurance - and think that they have got me!!

Will be interested for any replies

Yes it was over a year later that I claimed. Got paid out with interest for the 15 months plus over payments refunded with interest. They paid me the full cost to pay off the mortgage. One good thing to come out of this horrible ordeal.

Good luck with everything.

Dear Anne and K,

Thank you so much for your response. I will let you know how I get on. Fingers crossed. What I have concluded is that, whatever the outcome of this, I will start a push for others who are diagnosed with invasive BC to check their policies - it’s the last thing on people’s minds. Awareness raising should be in the info pack they give when you’re diagnosed with this c***P disease.

Hi
I was told after DX our policy was only payabe upon death. I thought huh typical just my luck.
To cut a long story short we only had 5yrs left on our mortgage and it is a small one so we paid it off. I went to cancel the insurance DD we paid and a friend said ask if you can keep paying the insurance see if its life cover. Off i went to Abbey again and the woman said this is a critical illness cover payable on illness or death. No its not i said i was told it was only payable when you die. However to cut a long story short even though it was a year later and our mortgage had been paid off we still got nearly 4,000 from the insurance.
Push for it if they dont cough up but most people i know have got it.My friend had her £40,000 mortgage paid off and bought a place in South of France with it lucky her.

Do they only pay up if you are not getting paid from work? Also we have joint mortgage so does that make a difference?

Hi Liverbird,

Thanks for your comments - sounds hopeful. Normski - it has nothing to do with whether you’re getting paid from work - a joint mortgage will also not make a difference. If you have critical illness cover, just look at the list of conditions that they will pay out for - invasive breast cancer will be listed.
Hope this helps

Hi janeyb

Just realised what a stupid question I asked anyway. However have checked with our Insurers but we are only covered if one of dies or has a terminal illness.
Silly girl though on the phone when I quickly told her about my BC and that was the reason for my query. asked me if I wanted to speak to someone with regard to taking a Critical Illness Policy out now! Excuse me? Any takers then!!!

In reply to the above (Norma) I made a sucsessful claim with Legal and General for a substancial amount to pay off mortgage, which you can do, but don’t have to, I decided not to, but invested money and have carried on paying mortgage because we are both working and can afford it. Anyway Legal and General have given me a new policy with critical illness cover incase anything happens again (although I hope not) so maybe not a bad idea. It covers me and my partner.

Axa paid out my endowment policy but I am now looking to get some sort of payment protection plan for other stuff, prudential and Land G have said no.
Anyone got any ideas

Hi

I am the same, only realised in Jan 08 and was disgnosis in Aug 06. The insurance people have written to Gp for report so I am hopeful that they may settle. They have been very quick to put the whole thing in motion and have already written to me three times to keep me updated as to the progress. So keep everything crossed for me and I will like wise do the same for you. Good luck.

Hi Ladies
I didn’t take critical illness out with my mortgage, because as I suppose we all thought, “it will never happen to me”.
Well it did and now I am wishing that I had taken it out.

Just one question to Imlauder - Did you take critical illness out with your endowment?

I have an endowment that has life cover on it, but not sure if critical illness.

I will phone monday to check

Take care

Angie

Slippy,

May i ask if the premiums are very high for your second critical illness policy now that you have been dx with bc?
Was thinking I need to get hubby coverred for some life ins with regard to the mortgage as we did not pay ours off either when L & G paid out for me.
