Hi
Do not know to much about breast cancer and the ins and outs but I do know the effects. Just under 2 years ago one of our 25 year old twin daughters Leigh went to her GP because of a lump. On the third visit 3 months later she would not leave until she got an appointment at the local breast care clinic. It turned out she had stage 3 cancer which had spread to her lymph nodes.
Our other twin daughter Nicola tired to get a referral to the Breast Clinic but again she had the same problem with her GP but they did refer her after two visit. She had precancerous cells and within a week she had her breast off as well.
It seems like a life time ago but Leigh has just finish her herceptin and Nicola has just given birth to a little miracle called Amelia Grace. So much has happened in such a short time.
This petition is not the first about referrals and I am sure it won’t be the last but we must keep reminding the Government something is wrong.
This is ours
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to ensure that all the guess work is taken out of the initial breast cancer diagnosis and that every woman with a breast lump concern, no matter what her age will be given a mammogram or the equivalent within 30 days of seeing a doctor.
Had Leigh not been so stubborn our life’s could of been completely different now. So we started the petition.

Hi there, so sorry to hear about your girls at such a young age, but wonderful news about the baby! I have spoken to many ladies whos lumps were dismissed as “nothing”. Every lump should be referred, my gp said mine would be ok but I insisted on being referred and it was bc. The gp’s do not have the experience to know whether they are cancerous or not. Best Wishes, Liz
Hi there,
I think alot depends on your GP or area. There are alot of benign breast conditions but I think that everyone should be refered for more tests to rule out cancer. My GP refered me straight away, I was a little older at 38 and thank goodness that she did.
Best wishes with your campaign, I will take a look now.
love Andrea x
Not sure , don’t know and of course it is.
You are so right about, every woman (regardless of age) who is symptomatic (skin thickening, lumps, discharge etc) should be reffered to their breast clinic within 14 days.
But in the real world it is not happening and I know my 2 daughters are not the only ones to be misdiagnosed over the past couple of years maybe it is still happening and it might go on happening even with the 14 day rule.
It’s a bit like putting 3 marbles in a sock and asking a GP to guess what colour they are.
A GP with 2000 patients might only see 1 patient a year with breast cancer and the chances are they will be over 50.
What about the consultants who complain to GP’s about inappropriate referrals. No pressure there then and nothing to do with money.
All we are trying to do is put something right and to make sure no one else has the same problems about misdiagnosis or bad guesses like we did.
No need to feel sorry for us, the past couple of years has brought as all closer together.
Hi I have just signed the petition. I am completed with you in this case
I am 31 and was refused to refer to the Breast clinic when i found a lump- my GP did not even examine me and he thought i was just fussy. I insisted he did so- unreluctantly he did but was very anonied by my persistency.
I turn out to have BC and now under chemo. Had I not insisted things could be so much worse!!
Many young women has worse progonis and i think this is largely due to the fact that when they are dx their cancer is not at very early stage already. So hope this petition could help more young women!!
I completely agree with what you are trying to do… I’m 24 and my GP got me seen within 2 weeks because she thought it was suspicious but she explained that referrals to the hospital were the quick 2 week one or a 6 week wait if its not suspicious.
Of course its a rarity to be so young and have breast cancer but at the very least women should be referred on the 6 week waiting list, at least!
Luckily your daughter knew herself well enough to state her case and get seen… well done for highlighting this really important issue and taking this experience to hopefully helps other in the future.
